Which kitchen style for my 90s-era house?
Comments (38)I don't think it was actually about trends for me. I suspect I'll like what I like now for most of the rest of my life. I think it was more that I'd never really considered kitchens before. Or my home. I'd just bought my first home when I started pinning and had never had the choice to decide how my kitchen looked before or flipped through kitchen pictures before. For instance, I don't think I'd seen an all-white kitchen before, which is a clean, crisp, appealing look. So I pinned a bunch of those. And then later I found some multicolored kitchens I liked so much more, and now I could never go back to all white. So it was more of a you-have-to-kiss-a-lot-of-frogs thing at work. With no perspective and nothing to go on, I had very little idea of what worked for me and what makes me happy, and I'd seen very little of what was out there. I also knew nothing about kitchen function. But now I've seen a bunch, learned a bunch, and thought a bunch, and I think I can happily marry this general concept for the long haul: lots of windows, green view, decidedly informal low-to-mid-range finishes, overall light and bright in tone, some wood, and some actual color on the walls or cabinets (yellow, green, or a warm blue). The real problem is that my husband hates yellow and green and prefers dramatic, dark, and fancy stuff, and I'm also married to him for the long haul....See MoreCabinets are grayer than planned ... how to compensate?
Comments (118)I have a decision (at long last)! These are the 3 floors with the cabinets, at the granite yard in front of polished Blue Ocean Quartzite. We are going with the lighter floor (sandy tan color in the middle). I ordered a box of it to see a larger swath, but it works. The contractors all like the blue gray best, funnily enough. The counter material is being honed, they had some honed slabs (all on hold) and while its beautiful in polished, it is even better honed. Our fabricator will do this (for a fee, of course!) This is what it looks like when honed, it gets lighter and softer. I realize that many people won't love this choice, but when I see it ... I love it. I see sandy floor, aged oak, and soft blue water. Thank you for all of your help. When it is all done I will post pics (and hopefully figure out the white balance on my phone so it looks like real life). Comments (10)I think a soft pale mauve for the bedroom would be nice you really need bigger bedside lamps for sure and floor length drapes too. I love slate floors BTW. I love that little nook with the chair you just need another lamp there . I have never been a lover of teal and purple in an adults bedroom but I think wht you have is all the teal I would do and fewer pillows too...See MoreJuggling appropriateness and homeowner taste
Comments (41)I feel like the condo decor was a series of very deliberate choices that was probably expensive to execute. The most obvious bit is the fully integrated fridge. The less obvious bit is that it is difficult to achieve that almost dimensionless flat whiteness. Mariette Himes Gomez (who actually decorates with a fair amount of color) talked about achieving this very white box effect that she does for the room itself and it often requires a slightly different shade of white on each wall and the ceiling to get that flatness. I am not saying that the condo is that exact effect or that it required whatever MHG's for achieving it is, but getting it all as "white" as it is with multiple materials and finishes is no easy task. As for the effect of one house on the neighbor's and so forth, it depends on the neighborhood. I prefer eclectic, organically developed neighborhoods over the uniformity of the suburbs. Actually I think it is the Scale discrepancies that create problems. My neighborhood has everything from the late 18th c. to (mostly) 19th c. to post 2000, and the houses that fit in the least are the post 2000, mostly because they Loom over most of the other houses right around them. As post millennial houses go they aren't bad looking, they are just too overscaled. There are much uglier houses (mid-80s) right behind them which are less noticeable in the overall context because they are sized better for the environs....See MoreRelated Professionals
