Cost of Hardi Shake Siding vs Lap Siding
Comments (4)I wanted 5 squares of the shingle and 20 squares of the plank. For the ColorPlus Hardi, the 5 squares of shingle cost the same as the 20 squares of plank. I didn't love the shake that much! I did not price the regular Hardi, only the ColorPlus. I see a lot of houses with shingles, so I doubt that the cost different is as dramatic....See MoreUntreated white cedar lap siding?
Comments (12)It's sure not an easy decision. I have a cottage, and some of our 35 year old untreated cedar shingle siding is damaged and needs repair because it was installed in areas in direct contact with the roof. Our contractor has suggested tearing the off the cedar and going with LPSmart siding, a composite, there is also Ecoshel, cedar shingle siding. I have researched at the Cedar Shake and Shingle Bureau, who have been extremely helpful and what I have come up with is...there is no replacement for real wood. If I repair the cedar which has been on for 35 years, I should get another 15 years. If I put on the composite it's lengevity is questionable, as with any newer product. I do know the cedar I have, although in need of repair has been on for 35 years and still has some life in it. Some people think the cedar is just old and dirty looking, I love it...See MoreRoof Color - White Clapboard and Black Shutters
Comments (33)New roof late summer due to storm damage. In Beverly's examples the original was Sky, chose Slate for new. Her pic is darn close to the brochure/shingle colors. The Slate made a huge difference in the look, which was unexpected. It just looks like a higher priced shingle and makes the house look larger. The house looks similar to the one with window awnings. I have white shingle siding with black shutters too. Everyone around was doing their roofs, so it was easy to take drives and see how they looked. My area is a mix of houses in every size, shape and design possible. A lot of cottage styles. Perhaps a personal take, but the lighter and darker roofs seen didn't give me a comfort level. Not sure what it was about them. The roofer I had actually helped decide. Am wondering if location, terrain, trees, ect. make a difference on what is chosen. A roof color is difficult to decide on....See MoreCombining Board and Batten with Lap Siding
Comments (35)@David McGee and @cpartist. Interested in your opinions, this thread is really interesting! We are thinking of doing a half board and batten design, where the b&b is on the 1st floor. The first picture is one of the only examples we've seen in person. Any thoughts on the 2 pictures of the design shown below? Should we flip the b&b to the 2nd floor? This design seems like a bold move, and having a hard time picturing how different color choices/configurations will look....See MoreMark Bischak, Architect
