Color suggestions: Exterior Paint for Beachfront Home
Comments (32)Hi Sueb20; we're around the corner in MA on buzzards bay. Many newer builds around us use the pre-finished shingles, which in the long run are more economical than painting every few years. It boils down to putting up the $$ now to save later. I always take the easiest (and least expensive) road. Painting this house is so costly, and it's literally a money pit w/ one major thing after another...having to put in sewer; french drains for flooding; a leaky roof; and on and on. And yes, neighbors are another tricky issue.. Wouldn't want to "steal" their paint color! Me too...about a fun door color. Like the idea of teal blue to match the ocean...but would that be stealing an idea from you?? I'm leaning towards lighter colors for the house...maybe something creamy w/ a clean white on the trim. I have been inspired by posts here, and especially by the Lettered Cottage blog -- my new fav. addiction. Thanks for the input. I'd do raisin if i had a different husband....See MoreIf I desperately beg....can someone please photoshop my house?
Comments (67)Ha ha! I was really just thinking about pouring a glass of wine while I chill out here. jamaraz, you know that you MUST continue to post pics along the way. (And identify with your screen name in the post) Nothing I hate more than going through the prelim step and then don't get to see the outcome! Thanks funcolors...more good info, and i'm def taking the plunge on the faux wood garage now, as well as finding a way hurry along the blue-green patina over the front door. And while structured topiaries aren't my fav either, I can see that having something taller than the typical potted flowers draws the eye to front entry. Curious, what did you put for the front walk/steps? The slate/flagstone needs a lot of repair and might need to be replaced anyway. CHEERS!...See MoreMCM Exterior Update
Comments (12)changing the garage really makes a huge difference in overall style when they're front facing like that. my house is posted above (the green one - please ignore the horrendous lawn). it wasn't very MCM looking from the outside, and the new door made a big impact. also, so much more light inside my garage! the style that I chose is a little different -- the windows are extra skinny (for some reason I can't find many examples of that online). if you're interested, the brand was Modern Tech style "BFL" (brochure here). but what you have now is not bad. you could paint them to match your front door for now and concentrate your efforts on other updates. also, regarding black soffits making the house darker: I read that too. exterior surfaces can make a surprising impact on how much natural light bounces into the home. it would be a pain in the butt, but you could temporarily tack up black paper above a few windows to see if it's really all that noticeable or not....See MoreHelp with updating 90's exterior please...
Comments (7)I was saying get a professional landscaper via a small garden center in your area who can look at the house and yard and recommend ways to set off your lovely home that will make you look at it differently. A garden designer can design easy-care beds even if you don't have a green thumb. The right native perennial plants, trees, shrubs, and groundcovers for your location, light, and water conditions will give your house a makeover. It's a professional job, however, and not something done out of the Home Depot garden section. If you want to tweak things, stain the pillars the light cedar shown in that photo I posted and match simple railings and a front door to it. I don't care for the limewash look, but if you do then someone else on the thread can help you out there. I personally think your brick looks fine. Good luck!...See MoreTerri Cohen
