Kill me now! Bonnie Hunter workshop!
Comments (23)Bonnie Hunter - she is a delightful, friendly, funny person. Her lecture & trunk show in the evening was fantastic. Her talk is very energetic, and humorous, as well as informative. If anyone ever has the opportunity to hear her speak - Do it! (From this group here) I am very familiar with Quiltville and her techniques, so most was not new to me. What I did learn is she is not a paper-bag-grab-it-sew-it scrappy kind of person, and she admits this. I was ready to abandon all control -- and fortunately I did not have to ~LOL~ She selects each piece of fabric that gets sewn by color, or design. Her scrappy is planned. Her reds may include all shades of red from light to deep purple. Her method of dealing with leftover fabric and pre cutting them and organizing them ahead of time requires great discipline, but it uses up pieces of scraps that would probably go in the trash. The string blocks I made were from my scraps and from Teresa's stash. Many people cut up shirts, others had coordinated collections, or Christmas reds and Christmas greens, the lady next to me combined beautiful purples and greens. I only saw one other truly scrappy and I did not like hers at all. I used only white, wow, beige, light tans as the side strings (Neutrals), which resulted in a secondary diamond design. I do not have a big variety of neutrals, so I may have to buy some. I made a few more blocks this week. What I do not like about this - is it is very messy, uses alot of thread and there is thread bits everywhere! It is also not quick. I will probably continue to make these blocks. Each piece of fabric is from either a quilt, or block I have made, or from Teresa. Bonnie loved that I was using a calico from the 70's - Teresa's! Here are some pictures so far - the blocks are not in particular order or sewn together:...See MoreCeltic Solstice - Bonny Hunter's mystery this year
Comments (13)Linda, thanks for posting the link. Valarie, I did her mystery a few years ago, called Roll Roll Cotton Boll. I enjoyed it for the most part, except for the string blocks. When I started them I decided I hated making them (and I'm not usually crazy about the way they look, either), so after making about half of them I stopped and went on to the next step. The project ended up getting put away for a while, partly b/c of other things to do and partly b/c of trying to decide what to do in place of the string blocks. When I got it back out I decided to go ahead with the strings, and I didn't mind making them then. :) And I like them in the finished quilt. It was fun to do, and Bonnie gives excellent instructions. She often uses special rulers but also gives instructions for those without the special rulers. It's fun to work along with others who are also working on the quilt. And it's a great way to use up stash! LOL Check out her free patterns on her blog to see the style of quilts she designs. If you like those you will like your finished mystery quilt. :) Donna...See MoreBonnie's Mystery Quilt...RRCB
Comments (29)I have done 4 of Bonnie Hunter's mystery quilts but only have one completely finished. I love her mysteries. She puts in some challenges and holds the secret until the end. For the RRCB, I have changed my colors a bit. I put blue in place of pink, green and brown. My constant (red) turned out to be plums/cheddar orange. I just happened to have sewed all my cut offs from last years quilt and had 200 HST...was I going to pass this up, no I don't think so! I am doing a smaller version so I only had to make 100 HST. I still need to make more string blocks but I have a few pics you might enjoy. HST group Block with Green Constant and I reversed the brown/blue Here's what the layout will look like The Final Set of Green/Blue with Brown HST Here's a closeup of the string blocks This quilt is an easier one than some of the past. I get a chuckle when she throws in 600HST's. That kinda blows your mind. Her quilts are quite big so I am doing 1/2 the blocks and will see what size that turns out. Well I must get back to making string blocks....See MoreWho is making the Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt?
Comments (24)Jackie, You better wave when you're in Orlando! There are a few of our members who live close by there. I'm about 2 hours away so we'll just be waving. :-) My granddaughter lives there though. Since Bonnie said if we wanted to make a smaller quilt than her's we should make half of the blocks, I only needed 50 of Step 1. I knew I wouldn't be able to keep up with the big one and I only have 10 more to make. Actually, just need to put the squares together, square them up and I'll be done. Kate, I think as long as you have some good contrast between your fabrics, you should be ok. I have never made a mystery quilt from Bonnie, so have no idea what to expect except I know she uses a lot of smaller pieces. Put your darkest where the black goes and the lightest where she puts the lightest.......go by where she places her lights, meds and darks to know where you put yours. That's the only thing I can think of to do. SharonG/FL...See Moremsmeow
