Its after 7 pm and its still 101
Comments (7)My envy runs amok now. We're finally getting those big, fluffy thunderstorm clouds every day in the afternoon, like we would in a normal summer, but they're refusing to leak. It's like everytime I go outside & look up, they sneer down at me [French accent implied]: "Go away or I shall taunt you a second time!" Today will be day 32 of 90+ temps here. At least 7 of those days have been over 100. It's sprinkling here where I work, but only enough to wet a sidewalk....See MorePalms Insulated in snow, 8' at 11:00 PM and still more to go.
Comments (6)the nearest report says 6.0 inches, but I think we got a little more. My potted pindo is covered with tons of snow, I actually still have flowers on my autumn blooming camellia named yudetide (means something like christmas in chinese because they bloom until christmas). Very high winds here too. Should probably get to 10 inches before its all over, and the plows went through once about 2 hrs ago and now you would never of known. And the snow without a doubt does some insulating. Its about 22F here right now, but a cosy 52F in my pindo palm shelter, a full 30 degrees warmer than outside. Without the snow it was only 25 warmer than outside. Good luck and enjoy the snow (it might be troublesome, but not too many people can enjoy palm trees and snow, plus I think its amazing how in 24 hours a street can be completely unrecognizable)....See MoreAre you observing Earth Hour at 8:30PM?
Comments (13)I turned things off just at 8:30. When I'd finished turning off several of the switches on the main entry box - water pump, frig, freezer, water heater and furnace ... when I came upstairs, I found that the computer had been shut off, as well: I hadn't shut it down. I've known that I needed to work on my friend's income tax return for days. After I got a couple of candles lit ... and the battery radio located (the batteries were O.K.) ... I started on it. Didn`t get nearly finished ... but she's not going to have a lot of tax to pay. She'll be happy to need pay me no fee ... she's under the limit of income that has her qualify for the free tax preparation service sponsored by the Canada Revenue Agency and offered by Volunteers - of which I'm one. I`m hoping that I can come up with about my usual rate to pay for my own return - about 9%. Stayed in the dark till 10:10 (the call numbers of a historic AM radio station in Toronto). When I turned the switches on, I learned something. I have a limited number of plugs in this house that accomodate three prongs and I need such for computers, so I have a heavy cable running from a plug on the side of the wash stand/lavatory in the bathroom out here to what used to be the dining roomm to the computer. When I turned on the breakers, I had plugged a lamp in to the wall outlet on the lavatory ... and found that it is on the same circuit with the fridge. That and the light in the narrow, unfinished attic hadn`t been identified when I checked out the circuits a couple of years ago - and some circuits have a number of items hooked up to them, in various areas of the house. I'd like to install some new circuits ... but the breaker box is old and, though I have empty slots, I don't have breakers for them ... and they're now obsolete. When the lights came back on, I started a loaf of bread ... ... it was done, now - long enough that I could shake the loaf out of the pan without oven mitts. Just had a slice ... with brown sugar, that in the bag was so hard that I had to soften it up for a couple of days with banana peels before putting it into the former jam bottle. Fresh bread! One of life's minor blessings! Electricity ... another of life's substantial blessings - let's commit ourseves to conserving it, so that folks in parts of the world where there's been minimal use can start using more, without messing up the environment so badly that it becomes uninhabitable by humans. Without saying anything about cars ... and they're going to be driving many more of them, as well ... not to mention trucks, as they consume more than they have been. I hope that you're enjoying your weekend: good wishes to you and yours for having a really happy one. ole joyful...See MoreCan we still PM members?
