Help selecting shrubs or trees to replace current landscaping

We planted our landscaping a few years ago with the help of a local nursery landscape designer. We are disappointed the shrubs against the house have not done well and have decided to replace them. We feel the shrubs and trees on the left side of our house looks great, but may need to balance the opposite side by adding more. What would you recommend as far as shrubs/decorative trees? We get full sun. Thank you for your time.

Comments (5)Spacing generally refers to the mature width of the plant (and most likely, but not neccessarily the roots), whereas average size indicates the height of the plant. (if you're not talking trees, avg. size might even indicate the avg. height you can keep the plant pruned) Trees either have shallow roots which spread (think crepe myrtle), or a tap root (a main root which goes straight down)-(like pines). Some evergreen trees can get huge! Comments (2)Great looking house in a fantastic site! I love our October Glory. This was planted as a 6' tree about 4 years ago. This is a late afternoon picture. It is a clean tree as is our Autumn Blaze in the back (it is growing faster, different drainage). I have tried a couple of sugar maples, but have been disappointed, maybe I don't have the patience - they might just grow slower. They are all good for attracting Robins for nesting. Redbud are nice because of the early season color. You have choices on those (depending on what your garden center has), either multi-branch or single trunk. That is a personal choice on your part. You would want to place those where they can be easily viewed from inside, dining area? Most of the trees on the north and west are deciduous and will drop their leaves. Will that make a lot of work for you back there? Personally, I like a spruce or two, they would be good for wind blocks. However, you might not need that with the woods there. If you are new to that house, you might not know what happens in the winters (that changes a lot recently). I think that your ideas are good, what about some perennials in front? I didn't see much away from the house, just those immediately in front. Or, are you just considering trees at this time? You might consider some shrubs to help the overall look. The shrubs might be hedge-like or not. Tall 7'+ or something under 4'. Ask at your local garden center about discounts. If you purchase one or two, they won't make a deal. Comments (4)I also have seen reports that 'Smaragd' Emerald Green do not go brown in the winter. There are some other arborvitae cultivars which are reported to brown in the winter. That person may have gotten the Emerald greens confused with those cultivars. It, also, could be that in your area the Smaragds get so stressed in the winter that they do turn brown. I have a screen of thuja 'Green Giants' which all winter stay a nice color for me situated on the north side of our neighbor's two story house. But my friend has a 3 foot high row of the same cultivar of my trees planted along the south side of her 7 foot tall privacy fence. Her trees while they were trying to get established did change color last year. Not exactly brown, but more of a burgundy shade. They greened back up the following spring and summer, and we are still waiting to see if hers will stay green over the coming winter....See MoreWhat do you think of this landscape design, tree and plant selection?
Comments (12)Once again, thank you for all of the comments. I have made some revisions based on suggestions to the original plan and have attached the layouts below. I have not yet ran these by the landscaper yet but figured that I would post the changes on here for additional feedback. #1 - I got rid of the Blue Spruce and substituted them for Gold Rush Dawn Redwoods. #2 - I removed two of the Purple Prince Crabapples from the SW corner and moved the Red Maple down near that corner. I think the landscaper had placed it in the original location to create some shade in the backyard. #3 - Removed the Wine & Roses Weigela, moved the Knockout Roses to the back row and put My Monet Weigela in the front row since the weigela will be smaller. #4 - Removed the Redbud and substituted it for a Kwanzan Cherry Tree. Other Notes: - Someone stated that the Sea Green Chinese Junipers get rather large. Are these easy to keep trimmed down to size or should I swap them out for something else. If you think they should be swapped out then what do you suggest? - Someone stated that the Compact Hinoki False Cypress may block the stone pillars. Any other suggestion of an evergreen shrub to use? - Any suggestion on what to substitute the Sandcherry for that is along the side of the front porch? - Landscaper original proposed blueberry bushes along the side of the house instead of the Arctic Fire.
