Theoretical Question: Do showers in earthquake zones stay waterproof?

Nancy in Mich

Hearing about the earthquakes in the deserts of California and the news that they will suffer aftershocks for a year to come has me wondering about their tile and grout and the substrate that waterproofs the whole thing. How does that work? Doesn’t tile an grout crack when the earth rolls? Is there a substrate that survives and stays waterproof? Is there a wall material that survives best? Can you even build a shower that floats independent from the structure and rolls with the punches, as it were?
