Help with bed /border shapes in my odd backyard
Comments (10)This also brings back a flashback of my own situation. I had been landscaping my backyard over the years, but in pieces and not as a whole landscape. This resulted in several disparate forms, a gazebo on a berm (circular), lawn (rectangle), and playset on bermed area (another rectangle). It wasn't until I saw a little side-bar snippet and drawing in Fine Gardening (don't remember the issue) that referenced "recieving forms". I posted here awhile back my excitement about this (see link to thread below). A recieving form is basically relating shapes to one another, be they bed shaped, lawn shapes or berm shapes so that the peices look that they "go" together, which unifies an area over a stretch of negative space. For example looking from space at the earth, it's easy to see how S. America (brazilian coast) can fit into the west coast of Africa. This type of re-structuring your lawn shape and bed shapes will help to bring together all of the areas of your backyard into pleasant spot. Also consider adding some berms for changes in elevation (assuming drainage won't be adversely impacted)to add some interest and aid in the recieving form effect. Here is a link that might be useful: Recieving forms...See MoreHow would you furnish this odd shaped livingroom?
Comments (13)How about a small banquette seating arrangement in the corner under the windows with a round table and a couple of parsons chairs for the game area? You could then use a loveseat in place of the sofa and an opposing pair of chairs (it would be nice if you could float these into the room so the traffic pattern doesn't cut right through the seating but I don't think you have enough depth). Or you could have the loveseat face the 8 1/2' wall, again floating it into the room, with the back facing the dining room (put a narrow sofa table behind it). Otherwise I would agree with Teacats that a sectional in the corner would be another option....See MoreOdd shape to decorate
Comments (0)We bought a 1930s house have opened up most of main floor incl small kitchen, diningroom and living room. Now its an odd shape to decorate. Contractors start this wk to complete painting, floors, trim and lighting. The dining room is much bigger than living room. I would like to add a fireplace/mantel/tv wall/area but not sure where or how to decorate to utilize space. Here are pics. Comments (46)Nice room. If your hubby likes the look of that red print chair and/or finds it comfortable to sit in, keep it. If you do swap it out, the beige wing back suggested (pic) would be a really good choice ... as long as the seat padding is firm enough for it to be comfortable -- do sit in it before buying it. You might also find him an ottoman with wheels, or one to which you can add wheels. Are you DIY inclined: Second pic (center) black ROUND ottomon: https://www.amazon.com/Leatherette-Cushion-Glider-Rocker-Ottoman/dp/B0002KNNMA I bought one of these footstools (ottoman only) at a thrift store for $3, removed the faux leather and plywood top. Repainted the metal w/new coat of black paint. Added a 1"x18" unfinished round wood "table top" from Lowes. Bought four heavy duty wheels of the bolt w/nut variety intended for tool boxes from Home Depot. Drilled four holes in the BOTTOM metal base pipe (carefully placed so they do not interfere with the rocking feature) and added them to the stool to create my "rock-'n-roller". It can do triple duty: side table or, w/any throw pillow easily replaced as worn (or as your mood changes) , a spare seat or ottoman ... and can be easily rolled anywhere with the push of a foot. I liked it well enought that I later ended up buying a second one (also at a thrift store) and now have a matching pair -- gave away both the old ones. If you keep the red chair w/matching pillow, you could use it on your own "rock-'n-roller". Not a fan of animal hide. Not a fan of tiny floor lamps -- much prefer the original dark metal w/dark metal of the desk. Small black metal/glass side table would work well with that desk. Floating shelf or wall hung box shelf beneath the tv is a good idea -- you could add a hinge and support so it might be a drop leaf shelf, leaving more room when the murphy bed is in use. Beneath that and/or the art, have you considered building a bit of storage for small office and/or media related items IN the wall between the studs with little more than the doors (think ... truly upscale oak base cabinet doors and drawer front for a shallow drawer) showing in the room ... especially if the art and tv are directly opposite from each other? One drawback ... that's a "cabinet" that stays put rather than can be moved....See MoreKicksychick
