Plants for Difficult Places Before & After garden

Nothing will grow under these pine trees

I live in Yukon, Canada, zone 1a. When we bought our house the tiered levels were already there underneath these trees but nothing grows there due to deep tree roots, too much shade

and lack of moisture. It would be nice to have plants and flowers there and am wondering if I should go with plants in containers or just give up and remove what is there now and don't put anything under those pine trees? I have actually considered removing the trees as we get so much yellow pollen in the spring and summer that covers everything. My family was appalled that I would take trees down LOL. Any suggestions as to what we can do with the area underneath these trees?

There are plants that will tolerate those conditions but I am not aware of any that would withstand your climate. I'd be inclined to just use containers of colorful annuals to brighten up the area.

The boxes are under some kind of broad-leaved tree, with pine trees looking on from behind - which area are you asking about?

Otherwise, yes, if you are having trouble using the boxes where they are now under the trees removing them and trying new plantings elsewhere on the site - probably directly in the ground, without any planters being involved - could turn out to be a lot more rewarding.

A lot depends on what, specifically you want to grow and what your gardening habits are. I, for instance seldom try to grow vegetable plants because I don't get back to them often enough to get good results.

The north and east sides of my garden have pine trees surrounding them I have 6 hours sun and I can grow all vegetables except Tomatoes with very long DTM watermelon with long DTM. I have my plants in raised beds so the roots of the trees are not a big issue. If you have an in ground garden you will need to watch out for pine tree roots sucking away all the moisture. The main issue here seems to be the sun. I would guess you could grow all leaf vegetables peas and maybe bean successfully.

The soil under large trees is often too dry to grow grass due to the sheltering aspect and also because trees take all the moisture to grow. The soil is also often devoid of nutrients because the trees have taken it over years. One can replace the soil as much as possible and water but it's a continuing problem. I have an island of spruce, fir, and aspen in my front yard and have amended the soil, planted shade plants on the north side and perennial ornamental grasses on the south side. Not a perfect solution but easier than trying to grow lawn grasses in a difficult situation. Every fall I rake the available leaves into that area and continue to amend the soil with whatever I can get and water as necessary.

Contrary to what you might hear if your pine is cut high and it must be if you want to plant under it, hosta will grow there. Never just water the hosta. The roots of the tree will grow toward the water and choke it out.

I recently read that pink lady slippers actually require white pine be above them, because there is a fungus in the soil under white pines that is necessary for pink lady slippers to grow. This explains why pink lady slippers are growing in only one section of the woodlands in my backyard--the section under teh white pines. I wonder if there is anything else that actually requires white pine to be above it. I'm in NH.
