Remodeling Design Dilemma Kitchens

Quartz counter seams...whats normal?! Please Help!

Hi everyone, I have a huge island in my kitchen and went with Quartz counter tops. I didn't have an option not to have a seam due to the size but I wasn't expecting the seam to be as noticeable. The company came back and worked on the seam but wanted to get opinions if this looks normal and is expected? First timer here with counters. Thanks in advance!

What is your issue? Size or color of seam? Vein placement? Without purchasing two slabs to bookmatch, I’d say it’s not bad. Not awesome, but not bad.

It sort of looks like the base color is off between the two, though.

What were you expecting? Were you given a mock-up? Were you present for templating?

I am a fabricator. Seam looks OK to me. Grain transitions at the seam with engineered stone colors like yours are inevitable. Physically the seam looks tight and flush. Seams are not "invisible" although they can be considerably less conspicuous with homogeneous grain patterns that help to hide the seam as the grain transitions are not apparent.

Thynes! Thanks so much for giving me the exact name and number for your tile. I had seen your expanded kitchen post and couldn't find the exact tile. You have such a lovely kitchen, so warm and welcoming and the tile really makes a statement. I also see they only have one USA distributor. Your tile in your kitchen looks totally different than on the website..were you able to get a sample or see the tile in a store? I've sent Saltillo an email as well..so we shall see. cailgirl123, it’s a tough decision to make! Our bathroom marble scratched immediately, but it’s a guest bath that isn’t used as often. I lift, not slide glass containers, etc. & wipe down water splatters after my grandkids use it. So, for us, it’s been a little over a year & I love it. Not sure about a heavily used or teenage-girls-with-all-kinds-of-products scenario. Quartz maintenance is a no-brainer, evidently. I couldn’t decide if I liked the light “marble-like” looks & would probably have gone with a solid gray in the kitchen had the price been more budget-friendly. I loved the quartzite (Fantasy Brown first drew me in.) but couldn’t decide about the brown part (depended on the slab) & functionality in a kitchen. So, back to granite I went. When I found a Thunder White that didn’t look like someone had splatter painted it with purple paint, I was in love. There are still small raspberry flecks running through it, but it’s not an overall purple splotch look. Lol! My granite place had no samples so I did no testing. It’s only been five months, but I love my kitchen counters! They do water spot, & I keep a drying mat on both sides of my sink as we often keep out glasses with ice water, etc. So far, no stains. I’m the main cook & our kids are grown. I do have grandkids who cook with me but since that’s supervised, it hasn’t been a problem. Hope that helps! Here are a couple of photos. There’s a semi-circle scratch on the bottom left in the marble close-up if you enlarge it. The marble has light & dark streaks running through it so the darker part is natural.

I just picked up a few samples and my husband and I settled on Snowy Cliff. I am so glad I came across this post as our sample definitely resembles the lighter 6607. I would not be happy to receive the darker one. I will definitely have to look into this and maybe even end up picking something else if they don't stock the lighter version. Thanks for posting Kim.

Thanks for the reply. I think the vein placement looks ok. The size & color of the seam just look too noticeable to me. The base color does look a off, not as bad in person though. My contractor was the only one here for the templating. I just wanted to get other opinions as I am not familiar enough to know what is considered a good seam. Appreciate your response!

They did an awesome job matching the graining! That's really difficult with quartz, and no two slabs are alike, and are not able to be bookmatched. I'll bet that standing back 36" at the standard to judge the seam at, that it looks great! It's tight, and looks pretty good, even close up. Whites are the hardest to have the seams be inconspicuous. No seam will ever be invisible.

So, they did a good job matching the Veining. Maybe it’s because the stone is so white, there’s no better way to do it? I will say, in our last kitchen, I saw the seams at first and then they faded(at least in my mind), might just be because it’s new. Sorry, I don’t have a better answer, just a novice. Hope you find a solution that makes you happy!
