How to keep the main drain to septic from freezing this winter
Comments (3)Obviously you can wrap the line with heat tape but water shouldn't stand in the line to begain with. So take your choice, heat tape or find why line doesn't drain dry and/or wasn't installed below frost line. If you care to go redneck low budget, build a small cold frame over the line from foundation to tank so that solar heat keeps ground warm in that area....See MoreLast Watering Before Winter Freeze
Comments (4)I usually look at the long range forecast each year to see rather than the calendar. Since the sun isn't too intense at this time of year, and the nights are long, several nights of below freezing weather in a row will usually crust over the surface and a couple of inches down, restricting water movement. However, unless you've had different weather than we have this fall, I wouldn't water; we have had a fairly large amount of rain in the last month or two. Check the soil moisture level in your area, but right now our ground is saturated or close to it. In your area, you may also find that your soil doesn't ever really freeze completely; it didn't most years when I lived in Cleveland which is similar climate (though cloudier) to MA....See MoreHow ticks survive the winter and freezing
Comments (3)I have had lyme for over a year before I found a tick literate doctor for treatment. Half of people test negative and half don't get the rash. Most doctors will toss you off to a rheumatologist or give you 2 weeks doxycycline which does nothing. So I've basically got this thing for life and have to manage it. I've read so much on this and found all the websites and facebook pages that deal with tick illnesses. You wouldn't believe the misinfo out there, including the Center for Disease Control. This is an epidemic that is just beginning to be recognized. A task group for study has been formed, thank goodness, of experts and patients who will report to the government. Hopefully they will give this more $$ and attention than the billions spent on Zika. 300,000 people in the USA alone are diagnosed in one year with tick illnesses. Misdiagnoses include chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, ALS, multiple Sclerosis, Parkinsons, and dementia. All these illnesses have the same symptoms as tick diseases. The tests are inadequate. I could go on....retired teacher here, just wanting to educate about this, especially in the northeast. It's worldwide, very bad in Europe and Australia, too....See MoreQuestion about pump tubing freezing in winter
Comments (3)I have a floating heater about 1.5' in front of my skimmer. so far yes I had some freezing in the above ground tubing. Nothing frozen solid and always have water running through the converted sand filter ( all this has in it is poly strapping packed full ) and into the spillway. Sometimes there is a ice cover over the falls but it is still running and flowing. I know the heater only puts out enough heat to keep a hole in the ice and not enough to completely warm the filter and all but it's working. Skimmer is just under the walkway to the left....See Moredaninthedirt (USDA 9a, HZ9, CentTX, Sunset z30, Cfa)
