What should I do with fixing this wall? Mudding Questions
Comments (5)It looks like th efinish coat of plaster-lime came off. You can use EasySand setting compound to aply a new finish coat in the area. Somebonding compound wll prevet the old plaster (it hassad added as an extender for base coats) from pulling moisute our of the new coats before tey can set corectly. If you cannot find bonding aget (Eucoweld is a common one) you can mix plain white Elmer's glue 50% with water, then paint it on the area. Allow it to dry until tacky, then apply the mud. Using pre-mixed mud would not be a good idea. It will put excessive moisture into the old plaster. Older masonry houses often had plaster applied directly to interior brick surfaces on exterior walls....See Morebad drywall leads to bad mudding
Comments (7)Easysand is one brand of setting compound. It is available in a number of set times, indicated on the bag by the umber following the name. Easysand20, Easysand45, etc. The number is the approximate setting time in minutes, but like any plaster product is is only a rough guide. GO for the largest number you can find (often 90, but longer is made). You can top with premix or more setting compound. I never use premix for anything any more. You can put another layer on the setting compound as soon as ot has hardened. It does not need to dry, just set....See MoreHow do I fix sunken trim (drywall over plaster disaster)
Comments (6)UGHHHHH ... What is wrong with people, why do they do that! If plaster is bad enough to drywall instead of repair theplaster, then its bad enough to REMOVE COMPLETELY. Should be easy if its that bad of condition. If its stuck on tight and cant be removed - then just fix the dang plaster! Futzing w/ new trim ... that could be expensive too if you get something milled to be similar to what you have... youd have to build out the windows/doors as well to get the trim to be on top of the drywall. Id almost be tempted to remove the drywall and do it right It is possible to do drywall patches , even quite large depending on the extent of the damage, and not have to remove the trim. But Im afraid it would still be a beast of a job. Sorry Im not much help - you have my sympathies....See MoreDrywall taping mistake
Comments (4)staubinn- FYI- Don't sand at the early stages. If you have something that really stands out, and you think it will be a problem later, use a 4" taping knife to shave off the high spot a bit. This will prevent those problems with fuzzing up the tape that you get when you sand. Also, if you're inexperienced with taping, here's a tip. One thing I finally figured out is to wipe off the taping knife on the edge of the bucket or tray when you go back to do the second swipe with the knife. It sounds like a lot of unnecessary work until you see that doing it this way prevents leaving a lot of remnants behind and reduces the rework you have to do. It ends up being a lot faster overall, and there are fewer spots that you have to fiddle with later....See Morecpartist
