I'm not a lighting expert, but I think you would need a fixture that either has light that goes both up and down....or get the maximum wattage that you can get! Below are some examples. This fixture has 6 bulbs that can be 100 watts each....that's 600 watts total.....a lot of light!!!! And the price is nice! The cab next to the oven column has a base and an upper cab that is 15" or 16" above the counter and pulled forward so that its face is even with the base cab face. It will be similar to this set-up, except that the toaster oven cubby will only be 19 1/2" deep (the toaster oven, inc handle, will pretty much fill the space front to back). The toaster oven has a lighted control panel so we won't have a problem reading temp, settings, etc. I realized that I'm adding 2 additional can lights to the kitchen so yes, definitely on the dimmer switch! I can't wait to see my kitchen either, Carol! =) The lighting rep recommended the 10" back from the front. I forgot to ask her if that was OC (on center) or to the front edge of the can but since we're talking about 2", I decided not to worry about it and go with the front to back position of my can in the corner above the windows since not repositioning it will save us a bit of $$. There won't be any work counter in the area next to the ovens, only a shallower than standard counter for the toaster oven. Everything else is floor to ceiling cabs so lighting in front of it is preferred. The can above my fridge and fridge cab was placed way too close to the cab face creating glare on the cab and shadows where I don't want them. Also, it's how our current cans are placed and it's worked well for 20+ yrs. Good luck with your kitchen planning!

We don't have any pendant lights at all in our kitchen, I couldn't find any I like that were going to bright enough. We have 11 can lights (8 are the 6" cans, 3 are the 4" cans) and have LED bulbs in them all. We also have 3 LED lights in our oven hood (60") and LED strip lights under our upper cabinets and in our upper display cabinets. (We also have some decorative LED color changing strip lights built into our island, but that's not used on a regular basis, it's only mood lighting for parties, LOL!) I'm personally very pleased with the look of a cleaner ceiling. Hubby thought we were going to want pendant lights over the main sink and/or island and I kept asking him to wait on that and let's just see the finished kitchen without any because we could always add it later if we still felt it was needed. I'm glad he agreed with me that it wasn't needed after all.

You are right about the North facing rooms being difficult to make look brighter. Usually White Paint in a North room doesn't work. White paint needs light in order to make it look white! That's prob why you have difficulty. plus, it's usually a cooler, bluer light from the north. AS you can see, your winter white is a gray/green undertone. not the best color to have in a bathroom! Definitely not a warm white! Vanilla Milkskake is a warmer white. leans on the yellow/green spectrum though I tried White Dove in my room (west/south) and couldn't stand it. too dingy looking. I painted over it w/Simply White. White Opulance is a nice white. but it's a red undertone, not a warm yellow. (has a very slight pink hue.
