Help! Pool backwashed into garden! Can these veggies be saved?
Comments (3)I very much doubt that the problem is chlorine. There's probably no chlorine in the pool unless he just chlorinated it recently which doesn't make sense, it's too early. The other chemicals in the water might be more of a problem, mainly salt. Most of the chemicals that get added to pools cause the salinity of the water to increase. Other than that just having standing water in your garden can cause the plants to not get oxygen. I'm not sure there's a whole lot you can do: if there is standing water, you should make it drain away (get a sump pump and pump it away) if chlorine is the problem, I doubt there's much you can do because the chemical that you would use to de-chlorinate would result turn the chlorine into salt (sodium chloride) and that's a bad thing for your soil. If your soil has good drainage, then the best thing to do would be to flush it wish clean water, but the soil here holds a lot of water, and more water would just make things worse. Seems to me like your neighbor should pitch in to repair the damage. it was his pool water that caused it....See MoreWhat can I be doing with my veggie garden right now?
Comments (1)I just moved to Santa Fe last fall, and I've been wondering the same thing. Last weekend I mixed compost innoculant into my compost bin, but I fear it might still be too cold for that to do any good. I've started raking leaves, and noticing where the trees and bushes have dead branches that could be cut out. I won't cut live branches until the new Spring growth starts up. I'm designing a rain barrel system, and collecting the parts to attach to inexpensive garbage cans, so that I can hope to keep my over-ambitious garden watered this summer. I've been collecting materials for building self-watering planters, as described in the Container Gardening forum. As the weeks wear on, it becomes an ever more complex engineering problem, involving float valves and such so that they really *are* self-watering. I've been re-potting, pruning, and propagating houseplants to keep myself busy and allow myself to dig in dirt (or faux dirt, anyway). Soon I'll start a few seeds, even though it's early, because I've decided to take my chances with germinating my collection of old seeds (some quite old indeed -- though experience has shown me that many old seeds will germinate just fine), and I'd like to see what's going to make it before it's too late to go get new ones, if there's something I can't live without. I'll also try my hand at propagating the indoor herbs from cuttings, because I've never done that, and a few more herb plants wouldn't be a bad thing. As for amending your soil, I'd guess it's not too early for that -- some amendments are best done well in advance of planting, anyway, so that things can settle in. There may be a couple of things that could be planted this early. Garlic and the like comes to mind. You could try radishes, which don't seem to mind the cold, but don't be too heartbroken if you lose them. If you build a cold frame, you might be able to start other cold-tolerant crops. Good luck, Linda...See MoreIs there something I can do with a Magic Bullet ;)
Comments (15)I like mine. Small amounts of whipped cream (yeah, it COULD go with the other silver bullet.......be quiet). Quick chop nuts (oh geez.......this is bad) or veggies. Smoothies and shakes are good. Make bread crumbs as needed. I roast garlic and puree it with some olive oil, then freeze in "pats" to use later (good way to use up a bunch that's getting past it's prime). The whipped cream is the best though.....I like it fresh and it's yucky if it's sits overnight so I can make just a small amount that will be used immediately. I like the fact that there's just 2 small parts to wash. Deanna...See MoreDo you think I can save this....and do I want to?
Comments (11)I do like the cider brined pork roast, but I never let it sit overnight, and I only use my own pork, the commercial stuff is nearly always already full of "flavor enhancers". I tried brining the turkey/chicken/pork etc. and just didn't care much for it and I seldom marinate beef either. I guess I just like the flavor of the meat itself, without adding anything. Plus brine just seems to add too much salt for my liking, I can taste the salt over everything else. Sorry about your pork loin, though, that type of experience is why I seldom buy prepared foods. I'm picky and I usually just don't like them. I don't think I've ever eaten any product at all from Smithfield, so maybe they just aren't good, as Beverly doesn't like their ham either.
