How do you really kill stuff before composting it?

I know there are things that never go into the compost pile, like diseased plants, because no amount of killing is worth it, and so on. Or poison plants like poison ivy.

But I always have weeds that can be tossed into the compost pile if I kill it enough before tossing it in. But they gotta be good and dead first.

Ivy, Virginia Creeper, wild grapes... I toss those out on a concrete slab or drape them up and over a cage to really dry out and die before tossing. Seems like if I leave them alive, I just got another patch of that crap eating up what would otherwise be good composting space. Ditch/landscaping/Fulva lilies are almost as bad around here, heh. But those I just use almost like markers of dumping of previous years, and just dump on top of them.
