It's Almost 'Done'-Before & After Pics
Comments (30)Wow!! Thanks all so much for the responses!! My back is truly broken!! I actually have been dreaming about having a garden for years. I lived in spaces where only a fire escape or deck was available for planting, so I set my mind to do this and I just forged ahead. The greenhouse was a pre-fab from Gardener's Supply, although i don't know if they still offer them. It took my husband and two of my friends about 4 hours to put it up. I had a general idea of what I wanted with the yard. I had a rough sketch, I then found a Sierra Landscaping program for $9.99 at Target one Autumn. I spent that winter playing around with it. It was really cool! My husband built the deck, but I did all the rest pretty much by myself. He isn't into yard work, but does the grocery shopping-which I could do without!! It works out great! We need to trim some mature oaks (my neighbor's) to let a bit more sun in. I love the semi-shade, but I love heirloom tomatoes too. I have 10 kinds tucked into the areas that receive the most sun. My climber is clematis-on a too small trellis.I wired the top down so it would grow back towards itself. I also have morning glories on a trellis planter on my deck. It acts as a screen between yards. I have Rose of Sharon and a Lilac on that side fence also. Alot of the shrubs are from neighbors. The offered some seedlings that had volunteered in their yard. The sod is a new addition. Although a lawn is the last thing I want to tend to, I thought it would be a nice area for a hammock. The watering was a nightmare, until I ran soaker hoses on timers throughout the yard. What a blessing!! It's a real time-saver. I work as a pastry chef and the summers are so busy, I am really pressed for time. Thanks again! I really appreciate all the kudos! I'll try and post more as the season progresses. Jo...See MoreFinally, before & after pics of yard
Comments (10)Hey Shauna. Could you actually see Cameron in there? I've got better ones. Anyway I ordered through Saskatoon Farm because I was looking for seedlings rather than more mature plants because I spent so much on the wall and the soil & mulch that's all I could afford LOL. If you know of other places I'd love to hear about them. I'd also like to know where you order annual and perennial seeds. At the back where I'm wanting the fence to disappear I've got two existing Crapapples, and two immense Griffin Poplars and last year added a good sized Thunderchild Crabapple and a Mayday. My sticks this year are Pincherry, Dogwood, Sandcherry - not purple leaf, Highbush cranberry, Alpine currant, Cotoneaster, Lodgepole pine (at the side with the spruce), Amur maple, Sugar maple for trees & shrubs and I still desperately want a 'Toba' Hawthorn and a Scotch Pine plus I added some Dropwort and Meadowsweet I grew from seed. I'd really like to get my hands on some Goatsbeard. In amongst the boulders themselves a few nesting spruce, blue star juniper, horizontal juniper and mugo pine, and for perennials some 'Waterfall' campunula, cranesbill geranium, yarrow, coral bells, rockcress, shepherds scabiosa, lamium, Gentiana 'Nikita Blue', penstemon and bergenia for now. I'll want to start some creeping phlox and haven't thought about anything else yet as I'm thinking I still need a few smaller rocks - about a couple of feet to hold parts of that slope and to plant around. Whew! I did all that? Kate...See MoreBefore and After. Changed this area of the front yard.
Comments (12)Your tree looked so healthy & green, seems kind of a shame. I didn't recognize it as a mulberry tree though, so I can understand why you would get rid of it. I bet you really had to trim to keep it to that size. The ones I have dealings with I guess are wild ones that birds tend to leave right at the worst places. Like in the middle of my blueberry bush. They grow like mad! Looks like lots more tomatoes for your future! What is your favorite large tomato? I got 3 Big Boy tomato plants this year, got a bunch at one time, but there are not many on the vines right now. I am wondering if there is a tomato that spread its harvest out more. We don't eat lots of tomatoes, but a few every week would be nice. I guess I need to check for early, mid & late season tomatoes. Maybe I should put in a few more plants too :) I miss your beautiful lupines, but lupines only lasted a couple of years for me either. I tried planting some seeds a couple of times, but they didn't come up. I've decided I don't need to try such difficult plants, I'll stick with the ones that work for me....See MoreMy yard is finally done!!
Comments (26)Beautiful patio, Lynn! Your family must be thrilled to be moved into their permanent home. The plumies will add a lot of shade and screening when they're grown. Just remember to give each some room to spread out so they're not competing too much for sunlight....See Moredyliane
