It might help at this time if you can install a wick up through the drainage hole to improve the drainage now. You would probably have to lay the half barrel over on its side to insert a wick of about a quarter inch diameter up about a foot into the mix. This will only work if the container is elevated some off the ground so the wick will extend a few inches out of the drain. Read the container gardening forum for more information on wicking. When you are ready to repot check with the landscape supply companies where you live. I have a choice of 10 different mixes, available in any quantity, most bark based in Santa Rosa. Comments (4)You can always get some oxalic acid (deck cleaner) and a soft bristled brush and clean it. It might be possible to reseal it with an epoxy topcoat designed for exterior use after you clean it, but you do take a risk that it wouldn't bond with whatever epoxy was previously used. You might be able to mitigate the bonding issue by etching the exposed aggregate with an muriatic acid solution, but that's something only an experienced DIYer or a pro should do....See MorePerking up my patio furniture
Comments (8)Thanks, Tina!! The seat is 17" x 17".. and it has that little hump in the front. I haven't found cushions that size.. some are 17" x 15"... 18"x 19" and plenty that are 20" x 20". I am thinking it's worse to have a short cushion than a generous one.. true? I am leaning towards either a solid.. or a geometric design vs a print (I haven't found a print I like yet)... I saw striped cushions that might work but I am thinking stripes would be too much with the chair backs. Really, I want something that adds to the look without costing me a bunch (you'd think they'd be on clearance now but I havent seen any great discounts)....See MoreTrash heap rescue how to perk up?
Comments (1)Hey, doesn't look as bad as the title suggested, it's certainly alive and growing. Now I'm sure everyone would say to put it in a bigger pot, and so personally here's what I would do: I'd find the largest clay saucer you can get your hands on. I'm looking at one right here that's a foot in diameter and 3" deep, it only cost me a couple bucks. That should be quite over-sized for your little guy. I'd take my 1/2" masonry drill bit and put a hole in the center. I might also suggest a pond basket of roughly the same size, altho I don't have much experience using those personally, it would more than do the trick. Next I'd prep a soil mix that's mostly very coarse sand, small wood chips, and turface if you got any. I'd transplant that juniper into the dish so the roots are spread out evenly as flat and wide as can be managed, and I'd bury the roots in that mix making sure it's sitting rather high on a mound, piling that soil on so the saucer is heaping. Small stones ontop to weigh down and prevent too much erosion and make watering kind of easier. I'd put the whole thing outside, moving it every few days where it can gradually get more and more sun exposure (unless it's already been used to sun recently). The idea is it will have excellent drainage so you can water and fertilize often, and there will be plenty of room for lateral root growth without having excessive root depth that would just have to be pruned later on anyways. That just seems like the most efficient way to go....See Moremlee1976
