How many pendant lights for kitchen island

Remodeled kitchen with 7 foot wide island. Sorting thru number of bar stools and pendant lights

I can't really speak to bar stools, but as for pendant lights, we recommend placing a pendant every 2 feet or so above an island. Since you have a 7 foot island, you could do 3 pendants. 3 is a great number anyway since humans tend to gravitate towards things in trios! Hi Neil,

For bar stools, it may be possible to fit 3 comfortably spaced between each other. You can try to fit 4, if the stools are narrow enough but it won't likely be very comfortable. However, other things to consider may be what type of environment you want to create in that space. If close and intimate, 4 would be the route to go. If more casual and comfortable, then 3 would probably be the better option.

If you haven't yet decided on what bar stools to go with yet, we recommend the following:

The Tasha and the Boa can act as bar stools as they are round, hollow, and sturdy, or as accent tables.

As for pendant lights, it's a matter of preference. Pairs or trio's would work. If you go with a pair of pendants, then make sure that the diameter of the pendant is large enough to span the kitchen island. If you go with a trio of pendants, you'll have to use smaller diameter-sized pendants to give them a spacing between each other.

I think it depends on the size light fixture you are planning on having. For example, our island is going to be 75"x28" approximately and we are using 3 lights. But our lights are very narrow (I think about 3") and the light is more focused rather than wide. Not knowing what you are planning on using, I would probably try to have a pendant over the shorter side of the L and probably 3 lights over the long side. But again, it depends on the pendant size and light spread.

Hi Lizzie, The bottom of the pendant should be at least 75-90cm / 30” from the surface of the island. Pendant lights should be hung around 72” from the floor to the base of the light fixture. Good proportion practice should be exercised when hanging lights over a kitchen island, with equal space left between each pendant. Approximately 75cm (this depends on the diameter width). Smaller diameters can support a smaller gap between each fitting. Go with 3, unless the 24" pendants cast a very bright/wide light. Spaced correctly, I think 3 would look more balanced on an island spanning 10', with little liklihood of casting shadows. Try suspending cut up boxes over your island to better visualize 2 vs. 3 lights.
