What's with my plants reverting and sporting this year?

This is the third sport I found this year so far. It was on Lionheart( I think) and lucky it is not out full leafed yet. There are still 20 shoots left and only the side two were totally green. I was able to separate the green part. It has huge leaves Does anyone know why they revert back? Could it be from growing so large or lack of manure or water

Can't recall off hand who it came from but I now have a lioncub

Don't tell me I have to worry about "Hosta Change" and .. . and Climate Change!

Three out of.... how many do you have? Hostas are unstable, and if you look hard enough. which most people don't do, you will find some sports. You don't know if it is

"reverting" or if you have a new sport until you grow it out for a few years. Not all of them return the following year. Generally the solid ones come back.

I get a few sports (like 3 out of 90 hostas) each year, I only save the sport if it is something special I want to keep, (limited space here). You are very lucky this year to get those surprises. That is a good thing!

Golden Tiara is a seedling of Nakaiana, an unknown cross with another variety. Seedlings cannot be said to revert, since they are a cross of 2 different plants. There is already a solid green sport of Golden Tiara called Jade Sceptor. However, your plant is definitely not Jade Sceptor, which has distinctive if subtle corrugation. Your plant doesn't show any corrugation at all, and has deeper veining than Jade Sceptor. It also seems to be a slightly different color than Jade Sceptor, although that is difficult to determine without seeing the two plants side by side. What you appear to have is a brand new, and rather attractive, sport of Golden Tiara. I suggest that you grow it out for a few more years to make sure of the mature size, then consider naming and registering it. I find the plant very appealing, and as one of the Tiara family, it will almost certainly be a good grower. If you would like a division or two of Jade Sceptor to grow and compare it to, let me know and we can do a swap--I would love to have a division of this to see how it compares to JS.

My Jack of Diamonds is reverting: My mom's Francee threw out a sport, and she let me have it. All the leaves in this eye are this way. I am told it will not stay this way for long.

This is the third year it came back with this change, and it's just the one eye as far as I can tell, but I really don't want to lose GG so I should take some action. I'm lucky it didn't change over as fast as your Mango Tango, Kathy. Good luck with getting what's left of your MT to root and take off again. smorz, it is holding the ruffled edge and could be nice. I need to rework this portion of my east garden, anyhow, so might as well try and separate it. If I'm successful I could use another yellow/gold somewhere. ken, thanks, clarity is what I'm seeking, so restating my question is helpful. my hosta database shows plenty of sports, (progeny), some yellow, for Piedmont Gold, but none for Satisfaction or Goodness Gracious. I like my PG, I just didn't want a duplicate.

From what I understand Minuteman has a long progeny, So could it be reverting to one of those or starting a whole new sport. 'Minuteman' is out of 'Francee', a narrower margined cultivar and it is out of 'Fortunei Hyacinthina', which is a solid coloured variety. So it certainly is not reverting, but it is sporting. Since there is little to any chlorophyll in them thar leaves they will not be able to perform their needed photo synthesis function and will wither if planted on their own. The only way to keep this new shoot alive is to keep it attached to the main crown so it can rely on the rest of the plant to keep it alive...but who knows for how long..... Pieter

I quit buying after running out of room, money and energy but Myrle (McTavish) came down yesterday with the little one that won't be so little when it grows. A komodo dragon. Now I will have to find a home for the two . I guess 3 out of over 400 is not that many then ,. I walked by it for weeks and never saw it until yesterday pulling a weed. Another is in June but too hard to get to so will have to stay.. just a green . She thinks my plants are on steroids but one would not know that from the hard clay the poor thins are in.
