Carpeting alone isn't thought of as a major reno. What is the budget? How about a colorful rug and console table with mirror?

Without knowing your budget or style, it's a bit difficult to recommend things. Not sure what you mean by "modernize" the space. If the furniture and decor is going, you're left with a blank canvas to make your own. What will you need in the space? How do you want it to look? Have you looked through foyer pics here on Houzz for inspiration? If it were my space, I'd be tempted to change the lighting and remove the carpet from the stairs. I'd think about new closet doors and get a nice rug around the same size as the current one. I like the wall colour (on my screen at least) so wouldn't be in a rush to change it.

The carpet is staying. It is a major reno as it runs through the entire upstairs. It's also more then just pulling back the carpet. I'm not sure if you have ever refinished a staircase. It is big work and can get very pricey. We are interested in that amount of work for several more years, if even at all, as the carpet is in excellent condition. The colours are very dated; they are two different shades of a builder's peach. They date the tile flooring because they are so ugly and not in style. My budget would be about $500. I did say in my post lighting, paint and accessories! I obviously have an idea of what I like but like to get ideas from other people too.
