How did you choose and buy your bathtub?
Comments (20)OK, if anyone's still following this thread, I think I've selected a tub. I went to some K&B showrooms where I found only a handful of displays, none of which really stood out in terms of comfort... THEN I took a long, hard look at the space again and realized that I could only do a tub that was 5'5" long or less and 34" wide or less. And I realized I didn't want to spend a lot of money for a tub. So I ended up finding the biggest tub that fit those dimensions, at a reasonable price. I ended up deciding on a Jacuzzi Luxura. Haven't ordered it yet....See Moretoto 1525 tub
Comments (3)@cat_mom I hope you see this post. Your bathrooms are beautiful. It cracks me up exactly how much your "before" pictures look like my current bathrooms. We don't even call ours the hall bathroom, or the master bath - we refer to them as the yellow or blue bathroom. :-) We're about to start our renovations (first the yellow then the blue) and I'm probably going to get the Toto 1525. I'm very intrigued by your "slightly recessed" installation. What does that mean? Is the bottom of the tub below the floor level? If so, how much lower did you put it? I'd love to make getting in and out easier - I'm a little apprehensive since this new tub is taller than the one we're replacing. Finally, it seems from your posts that you live in the NYC metropolitan area, as I do - I'm in central NJ. Is there a showroom where you were able to see the actual tub? I haven't been able to find that exact one anywhere yet. It seems there might be a place in Brooklyn that has it on the floor, but they're closed over the long week-end, I don't mind driving. Thanks in advance....See MoreWhere to buy a Japanese tub with heater?
Comments (9)I finally figured out how to DIY a successful deep soaking tub. I used a simple portable propane water heater that is highly adjustable, like the ones Japanese homes have at the kitchen sink. I connected a water pump that was designed for recirculating hot water for heated floors. The tub came from a local pickup off of Ebay for $300, but I have seen this Japanese original somewhere for sale on the Internet in the USA. I paid about $300 for the water heater and pump. The tub does not have a seat on the floor, and doesn't have an overflow drain, which means you can really soak all the way up to your chin. Mine is temporarily set up on my outside deck, with a drain that runs to a drip irrigation hose in my yard, so the plumbing (pex tubing) is ugly for now. I am remodeling a bathroom with a very large shower pan to accomodate both shower and the Japanese bath. I do irrigation for a living so I was handy enough to figure this out. I don't mind sharing more details (abeliajunk61 at gmail). I hope to produce a how-to Youtube video eventually....See MoreLarge shower vs soaking tub and separate shower
Comments (26)For those who like the immersion of a tub and the moving water or massage-like functions, but hate the gunk and the noise, one company makes jetted tubs differently and those issues are supposed to be minimized or eliminated. They used to be called Sanijet and Spike had a policy against allowing us to even mention the name because they had violated his strict anti-advertising policy. I got a warning just for asking about them. (For you Houzzers who never visited us when we were THS, it was strictly forbidden for even the Pros who contributed to the discussions to even mention their company names before Houzz bought the Garden Web and This Home Site) Now, the company is named Purewater Baths. Pipeless Technology at Purewater Baths Each jet is a separate electric motor and there are no pipes under the tub going from jet to jet. So no microbe-filled gunk will greet you when you start jets that have been sitting unused with stagnant water sitting in the pipes since the last bath. Since there is no central pump, there is no vibrating motor making noise and humming for all the adjoining rooms to hear. It is supposed to be a technology that allows you to talk, listen to music, or watch TV, if that is what you want to do while soaking. Also, when installing a conventional jetted tub with pipes, you should be able to elevate the center of each plastic tubing pipe so that it always drains clear after using the tub. This would help with the dirty water/gunk issue. I always wanted to try one, and had hoped for years to someday have one, before arthritis and my other joint disorder made getting in and out of tubs impossible for me. They are more expensive, but I was willing to save for that if it made the bathing experience worthwhile. For those voicing objections to the gunk and the noise, I thought that letting you know about this option would be beneficial....See Moreenjay2014
