Lighting Design Dilemma Kitchens

How many pendants over 8' kitchen island?

i can't really find any "rules". We'll have a 99" island with this remodel and the sink/dishwasher will be in the center of it. I need to know how many pendants we "should/could" e have. Of course size matters, but are there any "rules" - in terms of how big the island is? Thanks!

If you are having a hard time judging the size and number, using some inflated balloons hanging from a string will give you a visual point of reference.

We have an 8' island with 2 pendants like Beverly's first picture. Ours are bell-shaped from Pottery Barn (probably out of style by now!) and 13" wide at the bottom. If you find something more on the small side then you would want to use 3 of them like the second picture.

My island is a triangle/pie shape and 74 x 69. I have 3 lights - set in a triangle. They are spaced 43" apart and only about 13 inches from the edge of my counter. Not only are my pendants within arm waving distance (they've been knocked a few times), I think they look funny - too far apart. Wish they were closer together and further in from the edge. But then my contractor forced me to make a decision when the room was empty as well. One of these days when DH is in a really good mood, I may ask him about moving them closer together. I think I would do 3 if I had a rectangle island and could put them in a row - BUT that assumes the lights were on the small size like mine - 4w x 7h. If you pick larger lights, then 3 may be too many. Do you have your lights picked out? If you look at the fixtures that have multiple pendants, they are usually spaced fairly close together.

I think slender buffet lamps on each end would look great! I say no pendant lighting..that way it will look unique and not like a residential kitchen. I love these metal finish lampswith matching metal shade from Restoration Hardware..offered in 4 finishes...

Given the 8.5 inch diameter and 8 ft length of the island, I would lean towards three. If you want visual confirmation, I would use cardboard or paper to mock-up the rough dimensions of the pendant and put them in the space. You can also take a picture of the space and if you can establish the scale, use photoshop to roughly paste in fixtures.

If you have a medium size pendants then 3 would look great, if you are planning to get oversized pendants then 2 will do the job when usually an odd number looks better.

TWO . A 12 /14 inch diameter roughly, depending how open or closed the sty;e. Looks much more updated. Especially if you have a dining spot nearby. Avoid too many dingle dangles.
