I like slightly contrasting colors, TBH. For me, cream is out bc it's too common. Love the teal option bc it's a bit unexpected and IMHO would be prettier than red. Good luck!

I do like Beverly’s recommendation to use the same color as your front door to balance the overall look. if you are going for the color scheme shown in that blog post, I would recommend using the dark teal on your shutters and door. You’ve already got the cream color on your fascia.

You already have cream trim so I wouldn't do the shutters in that color. Beverly's idea to match the front door works, although I prefer to have the door a color that is not used elsewhere on the house. You talked about the "S" shaped dogs being black, and it looks like maybe your windows are black so you could do black shutters.

Hi all, just to be clear, the dark teal I mentioned (Benjamin Moore Newberg Green) is what you see on the inside of the windows. So, the shutters would match what's inside the windows if we go with the dark teal. It sounds like cream is out and we'd rather just have the dark red on the door only. Do you all think the dark teal inside the windows (BM Newberg Green) will look ok on the shutters? Beverly, is there any chance you can work your magic with shutters in the dark teal color in a revised picture? Thanks everyone for all your helpful comments.

Thanks, Kevin. It does look like you used black rather than dark teal (BM) Newberg Green. Here's a close-up look at the BM Newberg Green HC-158. It's an unusual color in that outside it looks like a dark teal but inside you see more blue in it. So, we'd be putting up shutters in that same Newberg Green color unless folks thinks that's too much green / teal for one house.

IMO, the shutters make the windows seem too prominent and off-balance; especially the one upstairs where there is not really room for the shutter on the right to have balance. It looks so good without them; why not wait and see if you can adjust to them not being there? For interest that draws the eye to the porch, add a couple of flower boxes that hang over the railing?

Not a pro, but I agree with decoenthusiaste, I like your house better without shutters. It is so pretty, love your colors, and love the elegant simplicity without the shutters!

I like the BM Newberg Green, but will you be adding shutters to only the lower window ? It seems there is not enough room on the upstairs right window, at the right side . Consider perhaps only painting the entire window trim upstairs the same as the downstairs shutter ( and trim there, too ). Another nice option ,as far as color goes, would be to just stain the shutter a natural cedar color.

Thank you all so very much for your comments. My contractor and I did take into account the limited space on the upstairs window before we custom ordered the shutters. The shutters are 63x16 which should just fit upstairs and still look right for the 32 inch width windows.

I think we will go with the Newberg Green color which is a very rich, moody teal that doesn't show up well in pictures. It's really much bolder than a normal green / teal color.

I did a mockup myself and came as close as I could on color but the software didn't have much of a palette with which to work . So the shutter color doesn't look quite right, especially on the lower level. The one thing missing is the 'S' shaped shutter dogs which are normally in black. That mockup is below.

The house has had shutters for generations until the last owner took them down and got rid of them. The neighbors and all the old pictures say the shutters complete the house. So, we'll put them up and see what they look like. Worst case we'll take them down if they overwhelm the house. We did consider natural cedar but I think we'd have to strip the door down to wood and seal with transparent stain to pull off that look.

We really like the look of flower baskets over the porch hand rails and will definitely go that route.

I think your mock up looks quite nice, and the teal is strong enough to balance with the red door, so the best of both worlds really. Please post pics when you have your shutters up! ;-)
