I live in the Appalachian mountains of West Virginia. American Chestnut trees were killed by the chestnut blight, but it only affects the above ground portion of the tree. There are stumps that send up suckers every year from the root crowns. Some even produce a few nuts before succumbing to the blight. These are protected by whoever finds them like a secret goldmine. In a few more years you will be able to buy American Chestnut trees again because of the American Chestnut Foundation. They have been working for years to breed a tree that is at least 90% American Chestnut and no more than 10% Chinese Chestnut to give it blight resistance. These are hybrids, but they will produce nuts that taste and look like American Chestnuts. Chinese and European Chestnuts don't have nearly as good of a flavor as American Chestnuts. Most of the ones found in stores are actually chinese or chinese/european hybrids. The chinese are the only ones immune to the blight as far as I know. Hall's Honeysuckle is highly invasive, and is eating the South only slightly slower than kudzu. Just a heads-up for anything thinking of planting this. It smells WONDERFUL, but you will soon find yourself covered in it...

If you see them around late Sept or Oct let me know. Otherwise I can try Schumachers. I just thought if someone had a tree close to them I could get 5 or 6 acorns. I only want 2 trees for my yard and out of 6 acorns that sink in a bucket and seem viable I can get 2 trees. If I order them I'll feel like I need to plant them all! I could give them away I guess.

connie, me too! went to get veggie garden ready for spring...pulling up small weeds...and guess what? Some seedlings attached to acorns! Hadn't seen that before. We did have alot drop from the tree, although it didn't keep the squirrels away from my feeders!
