Hi Keltic, They could very well be fungas gnats. They reproduce quickly so if you can get rid of them now, it would be best. They're harmless, just a pest as they fly around. You can buy yellow sticky tabs that you stick into the soil to attract them, and let your soil dry out if it's wet. I used to get them even though my soil was never too wet. I did find they liked my avocado plants. Now that I've gotten over the fixation of growing every pit I see, I don't get them. Anyway, if drying the soil and sticky tabs don't work, what has realryly been instantly successful for me is flushing your plants with very hot water! Strange, I know, but it doesn't hurt your plants! Go figure. Best of luck, Sherry

I'm been wondering why I've never seen Orb Weaver's out here in Eastern WA...until after your post LOL! I went about the beds this morning checking seedlings and I came across an Orb style web I found attached between my Chives and Aster laevis, but couldn't find the spider. I know it's an Orb Weaver's web though! I'll go back out this evening and see if I can get a picture. Back home in ND and in NE we had them by the gazillions and I used to be extremely frightened of them (all spiders actually). These ones were the big black and yellow ones.... Dont suppose you could get one to pose for a picture? Probably a bit too small unless you have a high Megapixal camera. I dont know but if your plant has been having problems, I would assume maybe these little bastards might have something to do with it. Maybe since they are coming in and out of the soil, they are damaging the roots somehow. Just my opinion, but as Romy6 says, "Break out the 7 dust". Shoot first and ask questions later.

As long as they are not slow moving white ones... probably nothing - I agree. We share the earth with trillions of them... and most of them are good for something. They probably came with a soil and they most probably feed on organic particles of the soil.
