Dawn, doesn't that irk you. I sent for a filter for my Jenn-air downdraft range vent a while back. Maybe 6-7" x 16" and flat. It came in a box large enough to ship a king sized comforter.

Definitely irksome, morz. It's like they just grab the first box that's handy along with a mile of those plastic air filled packing pillow thingies and pack it up without a thought as to what is actually being shipped.

I hate those plastic pillow things. And packing peanuts. Hate them.

I'm not very generous with a 'benefit of doubt' when I see situations like this, having encounter misrepresentation on food packages. I know of 2 reasons this may happen. The first is deceptive marketing where the package implies there is more product than actual. A second reason may be manufacturing. This maker could be using automated machines to fill and seal product and wishes to reduce the number of box sizes his packaging line must handle. Suppose he had 10 different boxes and each machine can be adjusted to handle just one box size. For quick response, he'd need 10 machines. If he could reduce the number of box sizes to 5, he could reduce the number of machines to 5 and it would be a cost savings provided this was enough capacity. This also means there will be many boxes that are partly filled.

However, the example you showed is absurd.

Update, after 15000 steps, the nexcare was a big fat failure. I have two large, very painful blisters that have torn open. One on the inside of each heel , right under my ankle. When I wore the band aid ones, it prevented that. Ouch. Almost 5 dollars and a huge box for 6 strips of FAILURE!!!!! GRRR.

You need better shoes!

I was disgusted recently, with the packaging on some cabinet knobs. It was a bag of 10. Of course the bag had a zip closure. Each knob and its screw came in a separate plastic wrap. And inside of that, each screw was in a separate plastic wrap. After 30 knobs, I had a huge pile of single use plastic.

There was no need for the zip top, and the screws could have just been in one bag.

I was recently thinking of waste in packaging when I bought lunch meat from ALDI but the same with the name brand at a regular grocery store. They sell this lunch meat and it comes in a big Rubbermaid type container! Goodness, the container must be the bulk of the cost here! I've been reusing the containers for other food storage but I'm sure most people just throw them away. containers like this

How about when the store gives you free shipping if you order a certain dollar amount then you get your order in three or four shipments several days apart. What do they save doing that??

I wish supplement manufacturers wouldn't fill their plastic bottles 1/4 full (or less) with vitamins, etc. No wonder we're drowning in plastic! The head of the U.N. gave a talk recently in which he said if things keep going as they are by the year 2050 the weight of plastic in the ocean (he may have been speaking about the Pacific) will exceed the weight of its fish.

Packaging is out of control. My future daughter in law is a packaging engineer. It is quite eye opening to hear the psychology of sales that is behind much of it.

When I get a blister I usually add a cotton ball underneath the bandage.

I really really hate packaging but I think the reason they do it is because that's the size of bottle or box that they can get for the cheapest $.

Wow, that's ridiculous and wasteful packaging. I also dislike how amazon and some other retailers send small items in huge boxes. I mean, a small package of cat toys or a vitamin bottle in a giant box doesn't make sense.

Re. blister prevention, I bought something called moleskin (sold in foot care section or along with bandaids) which can be applied right to the skin or even to the part of the shoe that is causing problems. Works perfect with all shoe situations, and no more blisters.

I have no doubt packaging is done for psychological reasons. I stopped buying Kleenex because while the box is the same size it used to be, the tissues inside slide around because they're far smaller and thinner than they used to be. Store brands do a better job. I make sure I read labels for the contents now, because you never know how the manufacturers are trying to trick the consumer into thinking there's more inside than there actually is.

I think, it is also supposed to be theft prevention... but then I have seen videos of rather huge items concealed in pants or shirts...

I recall needing a small bottle of bourbon for a recipe, and there wasn't one to be found, till I was at the check out. They had all the small bottles there, where customers couln't reach.

Along with what sjerin wrote, a silly little packaging change of my own. For years (many) I've made hummingbird food once a week and kept it in my refrigerator. In a Simply Orange plastic juice jug marked 'hummingbirds'. Same large saucepan for bringing it to a boil. I decided I'd used the same plastic jug for enough months I should refresh it before it became brittle, and it wouldn't hold my normal amount. I hadn't even noticed the size (in the same shape with wider mouth than most juices) had been reduced from 59 oz to 52 oz. Now its a little shy of holding the quantity needed to fill all 4 feeders. I hadn't noticed we'd been drinking less juice for the same price, and its not inexpensive juice as far as bottled juices go.
