Need help with fridge/freezer decisions (cross post)
Comments (1)I like option 4. Frigidaire Pro All-Frig in the Kitchen and Frigidaire Pro All-Freezer in the Pantry. I would dismiss the idea that you must strictly adhere to convention for the sake of resale value. That refrigeration combo is a very efficient use of space and potential buyers will see that. That is the perfect combo for bulk buying at Costco. The only negative I see is having your ice-maker in the pantry but you say you don't use much ice....See MorePlease help me pick appliances for new build
Comments (1)this is what we have and we are very satisfied with all: Miele DW, diamante plus, but i think its discontinued, cleans great Miele speed oven: Love this oven. if u get this u don't need a microwave, its does it all!!! Wolf "E" series full size oven. we got a floor model from appliance store so saved $$, no problems with blue flaking although others have a had this problem. cooks beautifully, even/true temps Miele 36" induction cooktop, Love induction, would never go back to any other type. easy to use/clean, just a great appliance. other brands also get pretty high marks on here, i really never read a bad review about any induction tops. i guess u decide on layout, looks and cost. was going to get wolf, but miele was cheaper and i loved the look of it, no SS edges like the bosch, just a real clean, simple design. Liebherr 36" FD frig, love it and no problems. looked a sub-zero, but liebherr was much cheaper. i wanted a paneled frig, so that really narrowed down my choices., not a fan of SS frigs so i knew i was not going that route at all. we are a family of 5 and the frig is more than adequate but we also have a freezer in laundry room. you can also check out ebay and your local craigslist to try and save some $ i know gwers love the thermador frig/freezer columns, so that might be worthwhile to look into. these appliances are around 3 years old........See MoreSuggestions for kitchen appliance placement for new build
Comments (24)I'd likely want to put the refrigerator where the "P" ?pantry? is now located so you're not bumping the corner of the island to reach the firdge from the stove. Putting at least a narrow countertop on each side of the refrigerator can give you a place to set items taken out of it. Definitely would NOT want the HEAT of the oven(s) (or stovetop) adjacent to the fridge. -- put at least a 16"-18" countertop between them. You're sink appears to be at a window at an outside wall? That is a long way to walk from fridge to sink. Any tiny prep sink in that huge island is going to end up being used a lot more because of that. How many people do you need to seat? You might consider a narrower "L" shaped island or even a [ shaped island to create a more conversation friendly space at the bar (with more elbow room for each person as well)....See MoreKitchen Appliance Layout - New Build - Help me pick!
Comments (64)Certainly the front could have overhang added and windows changed I would think - it isn't set in stone. And the windows are going to heat the house up some anyway. Doesn't matter what is in those rooms, the same amount of a/c is going to be used to cool the house. Truly, with modern windows and a/c, it isn't like rooms with south facing windows are going to bake. West facing windows are more challenging. But yes, large south facing windows without overhang are going to cause an a/c load. But a properly designed a/c system can handle it pretty easily. West becomes more of problem because it is really bad for several hours as opposed to a moderate load throughout the day. Even East can be an issue because it heats up the house early before the rest of the house needs a/c. OP, I commend you on your stamina and open mindedness. I hinted at the gender issue with this before and most architects are men. At some point, with large windows and high ceilings, someone who isn't well versed and in tune with sun will feel like a room is bright even with north facing windows. And it won't be terrible of course. As I look at the elevation, the architects are trying to bring light to the public areas. But you would do better with lower ceilings, less windows, if the rooms were just on the south. Looking back on the elevations, it looks like the dining room will be 2 stories? That would bring light into the kitchen if it was more open. But it also is going to be a bit of a challenge temperature wise (and I am contradicting myself a bit ... but 2 stories). Easy enough to a/c but I am thinking about warm during shoulder seasons - while the public areas are somewhat cool. When we have warm Feb days like this entire month, that south glass will get a lot of heat. So a/c will run and your north facing rooms may be a bit cold. Not as much of an issue in the summer when the sun is higher. Elevator? At some point with some of the money in this design, you should consider it. It would be expected with a 3 story house of this caliper in my area. 11 ft ceilings mean a lot of steps to your bedroom with an injury....See MoreBT
