Pruning branches that have not leafed out but are still green
Comments (4)Thanks jean001a and Al, great to see you on the board. It sounds like if the branch is still alive, it's not a big liability to the tree. And if I open up a big wound now, I'll be exposing the tree to diseases. So my plan is to just sit tight and do some more investigative pruning in the fall to see what is going on there. Re: my graft, I'm going to do same thing. I'm not getting any fruit from the tree this year, so it makes sense to wait. If the grafts don't take, I'm going to take them off in the fall and look forward to donut peaches down the line. Thanks for helping me think through this!...See MoreKaren B....Yes, still waiting
Comments (10)Hi Bill, I'm glad to hear that my cuttings are looking okay. I will cut off the inflo on the cutting with the two flowers (Celadine). The one behind it (Yellow Twirl), the claws are wrapped around the inflo quite tightly. I don't want to damage the claws. Thanks for all the help you have given me. Hi Karen B., I sure like the color of that Paul Weissch. The yellow is so rich. I can see that some of your cuttings do have leaves growing. They must like something that you're doing. Thanks to you too for all of your help. Hi daviddurant, An inflo (inflorescence) is the flowering part of the plant which usually forms the flower cluster. The main stem that the inflo is attached to I believe is called the peduncle. This I learned from Jim Little's book, "Growing Plumerias in Hawaii". Someone with a lot more experience in these plants will have to help you with your "cuttings" question. Happy growing to all of you, Rick...See MoreEndless Summer bare stems: Prune now or wait for more leaf buds?
Comments (1)You wait til about now for old stems to leaf out. In zone 6A your old stems likely didn't survive anyway (last two winters were bad), so no harm done. Forever & Ever original ('Early Sensation') is a dud in my opinion - in northern climates it barely ever blooms and for me never reached more than 18" tall. Some of the other F&E plants are a bit more reliable. And hollow stems? If those are on any hydrangea, they're probably dead. Ant traffic means not much. They forage for nutrients and are not dead wood feeders like Sow bugs....See MoreStill waiting for the freeze
Comments (17)We are definitely no longer waiting for the freeze. Temps dropped well below average about a week ago and it looks like we'll continue in that pattern for a while yet. It's around this time of year, now that we've had enough hard freeze to put most things to sleep, that I think about putting some compost out in the shadier parts of the yard -- where I have forest or savanna type plants. This year I haven't put much time into the compost pile, so I'd have to have some delivered as I have in a couple of years past. I go back and forth about whether this is worth doing. This year I've been enjoying the baptisia foliage out in the hell strip. It's turned a sort of charcoal gray color, a nice contrast to the grasses there....See Morea1an
