Hosta ID - do you recognize this young hosta?

In a weak moment this early spring, I went to a garden nursery. Brought home this hosta that didn't have a tag on it. Paid $6.00. So I went to the online nursery's hosta list and eliminated all that were obvious. This is the list I came up with:

August Moon

Blaze of Glory

Coast to Coast

Dancing Queen (but not frilly enough I think)

Sea Gulf Stream (but is more frilly)

Sun Power (pointed, wavy, slightly twisted yellow leaves. Lutescent.

I'm kind of thinking maybe Sun Power? What do you think? (I don't have one to compare with.)

And hopefully it's not virused but just nutrient deficient.

I see that the pot said Proven Winners. The employee at the nursery said that she thought that someone removed the hosta that was in that pot with another hosta. I wonder why she said that.

Wrote a long post yesterday with this pic and it disappeared when I touched submit so let me try again. Newhostalady, you encouraged me to continue trying to save the Sunpower that I was determined to compost. Thank you, because this year two little tiny pieces that I put in one of the bathtub planters have decided to be hostas. I’m glad to have these very young SunPower hostas, and I think they look a lot like yours.

Not Sun power. Your plant appears to have six vein pairs and sun power is 12 to 14.

But wouldn't a younger Sun Power have less veins than a mature one?

Do not hesitate to begin your own thread. It is the normal routine. More people will know you're here if you introduce yourself with a separate post, especially the other Canadians among us. Two ways of posting photos. First is the GardenWeb way, by using the "Image file to upload" box at the top of the posting window. You click the "Browse" and look for a single picture on your computer. Me LOVE pictures....we are all Picture Monsters. The other way is to create a photo account (free is good) at Flickr, Photobucket, etc, but they must give you the HTML CODE which is what you copy/paste into the post. Can't find it? Then someone will help you find its location. With this method, you may upload multiple images, not just one. Look forward to seeing your garden and your hosta. Have fun.

a scale would help .... it looks too big for GT ... but no scale ... too pointed also ... PEACE comes to mind.. check the third pic at the library .... why are yours so shiny ... overhead watering.. but the new interior flush is glaucous ... ken

Carolina Girl, your first question about the yellow edged hosta - could it be Blazing Saddles? BS is a Tony Avent hosta. He's in NC and develops hosta for warmer climates. The photos in the library show it to be almost a white edge, but that is later in the season. I made a point of ordering several of his hosta this season (also Mary Chastain's Lakeside line). Mine is new. I just received it a few weeks ago and it looks similar to yours. I'll take a photo and post it for you. bkay

virus isnt usually a early spring issue ...

and since it should have come up on stored energy.. i doubt its a nutrient issue ...

some plants just come up like that in spring ...

what is it???.. i have no clue.. but it is NOT august moon .... but that is just opinion ....

label it '6 buck mystery' .. and call it a day ...

So I'll take August Moon off the list as a possibility.

I understand it is pretty difficult to ID a young plant. Just thought I would ask. Perhaps more time will tell.

Yup, the pot has the price. Pretty easy to have them switched.

I got a beautiful Empress Wu in 2012 that was marked wrong for about that price. Then they were very expensive so I scored. It is huge now

I have seen young Sun Power with less veins so that is likely it. Much better fit than any of the others on the list.

Yes, but maybe not half the vein pairs.

Yours is very "strappy", as in narrow and long. Also, it has more undulations than the Sun Powers on HL seem to have.

There is one younger one on the HL (photo by Sandra Lane), and it seems more arrow shaped.

Peren.all, it does seem that from the list, Sun Power is the one that seems the most likely.

bkay, I had a look at the other Sun Powers. Your point about number of vein pairs does make sense.

OK, I guess that's all that can be figured out right now. I will watch its growth and its changes this year. Next year should be a better year to get an idea of what hosta this is.

It should be a beautiful hosta. The undulations are exceptional. Can you see how beautiful it will be when it fills out? I'm assuming it will be a little darker when fertilized.

As we tell the kids, "You did good".

Thank you Kathy on not giving up on posting! I know how irritating and frustrating it is after all the effort to write a comment and it disappears---even more so, when it is a long post! I am pleased that my thread encouraged you to continue to try to save your Sun Powers. Yours are ever so cute!

I see the resemblance to mine! I will try to take a few more pictures later on and see what happens to the coloring. Maybe we can compare photos in the summer or next spring?

Does it look like this? I will check with McTavish if it is ( Myrle gave it to me years ago) She said it is Ophar and it does turn green as the summer progresses

If you haven't already, I think it's safe to take Blaze of Glory off the list of possibilities. Even when young mine had wider leaves and not so wavy.
