I am trying to find the porcelain tile used on a backsplash on the HGTV show "Home Town." It was on season 3, episode 11, I think. The tile looked like tin ceiling tile, a bit worn, but made of porcelain. Tiles appeared to be about 12" x 12". Primarily white with distressing.

Comments (21)I see I cross posted with a couple of other people doing mock ups. Jodi's right, the shadows make it look like a patchwork quilt and like I said, the lack of variation in the tile makes it difficult. Also, lighting is a factor. I try to flip the tile and work it in to give it more of a random pattern sometimes. I assumed these are 12x12 sheets of tile and scaled them all the same. Still not to scale in your kitchen, but figuring the normal space between countertop and cabinets is 18", I have two tile sheets (24") in that space. So they are smaller than they would really be. Comments (20)So tired of hearing " but that will make it look dated" or "it wouldn't be good for resale" Everything is going to be dated at some point, the kitchen designers, cabinet companies and appliance companies make sure of that. Example: stainless steel appliances were just coming on the market 15 years ago when we gutted our kitchen for a remodel. It was hard for me to find stainless in my area at that time, I live in a small mid western town. So, have you noticed in the past few years appliance companies have been trying to bring out new colors, grayed looking stainless, now ice white etc. they are trying to make people think their stainless appliances are soon going to be "dated". But I have read in several articles that stainless is still the number one choice. I chose a cinnamon stained cherry wood for our new build. I thought about white because that is the trend right now, but I reasoned cherry cabinets will always be in style while the white trend Has just a few more years. I won't be a slave to trends. Comments (12)lmao. what Jan said! Although, I had to help out my guys who did my herringbone wood floor. it's the starting point where everyone gets messed up. after that, it's simple. Look up how to properly start a herringbone layout and read it. you need to use a speed square at the end of your tile in order to get the proper middle starting point. much easier to illustrate than trying to write it out here. This is how I showed my guys how to start it. see the blue tape w/the two lines? you have to start on the middle after you mark your corner. that's the only way you will get perfect even cuts on both ends. this is how most do it, and it's not correct IF you want perfectly symmetrical left/right borders. All he's done is set the corner of the tile on the line. doing it like this will leave you w/one side smaller than the other: see how the sides of the window don't match? this is what you don't want. your tile guy should be doing a dry layout in order to determine where he starts so he doesn't get this look or these tiny triangles. Again,,,see how the ends don't match below? the right has longer tiles than the left edge. that's because of the way he started his first tile. And don't do these vertical tiles for your edging. get proper bullnose tiles, pencil liner or a Schluter edge. This is a layout board of my herringbone for my shower. took a few hours in order to get this almost perfect. since this was an odd size, and the tiles were even at 3x12, it couldn't be perfect. the right bottom corner triangle is the only portion that doesn't match. luckily, it's not readily visible! Even the subway tiles are perfectly matched. this layout took hours to get exact, even around the niche. 2x6your 3x9 will be 1/3 larger. 3x9 is a good size for a backsplash. this is a regular 3x6. again, a 3x9 will give you 1/3 longer....See MoreBacksplash Tile - Am I Overthinking?
Comments (27)T...I don’t think you are overthinking. My tile guy is excellent so imagine my surprise when I had slivers like you do on both sides of my rangetop. He starts dead center as well and I think the only way this could have been avoided would be if he had used larger grout lines which I didn’t want. I was So exhausted I just let it go and after a year in the house it doesn’t phase me. 3 years agoJane and Mary, what did you end up using? I also liked this tile from another Home Town episode (The James House/Countryside in the City - Season Two Episode 3) - Somer Tile Tower Beige). It didn't look dark edged like this on the program.
