Flooring Design Dilemma

Need help with flooring choice for split level stairways

We have a split level house. When we had the house built only the upstairs was finished and a door was placed at the bottom of the stairs going down. So the stairs were all carpeted with the same color matching the upstairs living room. A few years later we finished the basement. The upstairs carpet was a builder's basic grade and is in need of desperate replacement. The downstairs was a much higher quality and I expect replacement is at minimum 5-10 years off. The landing has some very low quality sheet vinyl and is also under consideration for replacement. I definitely will be having carpet in the upstairs living room (probably a similar shade to what is there as I really like color and have no use for neutrals). Ideally it will be a very plushy carpet but I don't know if that is a good choice for stairs. Any suggestions for what flooring I should choose for stairs and or landing to tie things together a bit more? The only catch is I really really really dislike the look of wood floors.

I know you're not excited about hardwood, but I think it will elevate the look of your house quite a bit. Do you have the budget to put in hardwood floors that match your stair railing? If so, that's what I would do.

At this point we haven't set a budget, the plan is to figure out what we want and then save up the money to make it happen. My husband would be thrilled with a wood floor but I truly have no desire for that type of floor. Wood is completely unappealing to me.

Color is such a personal thing! Do you want a bold statement color, or something that is soothing and sophisticated? I love some of the Benjamin Moore blue/greys, and also like the Vanilla Ice Cream color, which is also yellow but lighter than the room in your pic and does not scream "YELLOW," but is more of a cream. I could spend all day choosing paint colors, and I love doing it for my own purposes, but everyone's got their own thing. I have been into the orange hues lately, too.

Pal, can you explain or show me a picture of what you mean by a pierced stone riser? I'm not following...but I very much value your opinion on this! Joaniepoanie, you're probably right that I should start there. There could be a significant difference in price that'll tip the scales one way or the other. Although if one or the other is a clearly better choice, I'd be willing to pay more for it if it makes the most sense.

You have a lovely home! I agree that the tree is planted much too close to the front of your home. Also consider raising the canopy of the huge tree in front. Bring out an arborist for the best results. I like K Laurence's idea of using Rejuvenation.com for your mailboxes, lighting and house numbers. Put in a larger welcome mat, at least the size of the door opening. Consider putting in a small, round freestanding type flagstone (or some other flat stone or brick) patio for the two chairs. You have such a beautiful lush, green yard. Having a small round patio would be a nice touch IMO.

Interesting - I like your theory about someone homesick for New Orleans LOL. As mentioned above, porch cant really be removed without leaving scars - and an overhang much deeper than the rest of the house, which would look funny. Can the balcony be used, does it make sense to open up a room to it? Part of its oddness is that its obvious that there is no door and cant be used. Whats going on under the porch, behind the hedge? Some kind of patio? You could remove the hedge, expand that and make it into useable attractive outdoor living space - framed in a border of flowering fragrant shrubs, 1 or 2 well placed ornamental trees (ie short, placed toward the side of the house), intermixed with perennials/bulbs. You could leave a few of the evergreens - its just the solid wall of them that is so unappealing. What are the rooms on the lower level - would any of those benefit by opening up to a patio? .... or maybe it could be an actual courtyard and by that I mean a professionally designed walled space which fits architecturally with your house.... not an ugly cheap privacy fence from Menards! But then that gets to be expensive too - probably more than just removing the darn thing! Otherwise, maybe just swap out the frilly iron work for something simpler/more linear, with strong horizontal lines as is fitting for this style/era. Also changing all the white to something less high contrast - would help de-emphasize it.

Just wood stairs and landing -- it will go with any carpet changes you make, and it will wear much better on stairs than any textile. I too would match the built-in railing.

I can't imagine a reasonable second choice. You could do a tile or a tile-look vinyl on the landing, but where does that leave you on the stairs? You seem to like wood everywhere else (trim, bookcases, etc.), I can't see why you would object to using it as a unifying finish here. I guess match the carpet from the basement, and then coordinate your new upstairs carpet with that choice?

For your situation and desires, I'd suggest replacing all of the carpet in the living room, stairs and landing with mediocre quality carpet (with a good quality pad) in a beautiful color you love. That way, you'll have the color and cohesive design you want (it's best to have the same flooring throughout). It will be fine to have the basement level a different carpet as it's "separated" from the rest of the house. Something like this?
