Unique ideas for kids room?
Comments (16)My son is 10 and we incorporated a loft above the bathroom that is accessed from his room. The rest of the upstairs has catherdral ceilings so he has a little balcony looking over his bedroom. He decided to actually sleep up there with a mattress on the floor and get rid of his bed and box spring completely. We let him paint up there himself and then painted the main bedroom in the coordinating colours he chose. Our other " kid bedroom" is an open loft area leading into our bedroom. That will be for a second child if we're ever lucky enough. We'll put a built in bookcase and bed against the far wall incorporating the window and then probably a built in against the other end leaving the middle area open. Our son will be grown up and moved out or a teenager and willing to live in a basement bedroom by the time a second child would want the privacy of his/her own room. Then the room with the loft would be perfect for them. During construction you can see the loft hanging out into his bedroom The baby's room under construction. There are two sky lights under the insulation. The phot is taken from our bedroom door....See MoreNeed Potluck Inspiration/Ideas
Comments (24)I have an annual potluck to attend on Halloween day. I have taken the paella salad posted above. It is delicious and everyone loved it. I did add fresh garlic to the rice (I used basmati). This year I have decided on Ann's Greek Meatballs. Home Cookin Chapter: Recipes From Thibeault's Table Greek Meatballs With Avgolemono Sauce ===================================== These are extremely tender and flavourful meatballs 1-1/4 pounds Lean Ground Beef 1/2 pound lean ground pork 2 slices of bread, made into crumbs and soaked with milk 3 garlic cloves 1 small grated onion 2 tablespoons chopped parsley 1/2 to 1 cup chopped spinach, squeezed dry 1 tablespoon chopped mint 2 teaspoons grated lemon zest 1 teaspoon dried oregano 2 eggs 1/3 cup uncooked rice Salt and pepper to taste Option: Add some fresh chopped dill as well 5 cups chicken broth Sauce 2 egg yolks 1 whole egg Juice of 1 large lemon (1/4 cup) 1-1/2 cups of broth (from cooking meatballs) Makes approximately 48 meatballs. Mix the two meats together well and add the rest of the ingredients and mix well using hands. Saute a small amount to taste for seasoning and adjust seasoning as needed. Form into meatballs the size of walnuts and saute until brown. Drain on paper towels and then add to a pot of chicken broth. Simmer for 40 minutes until tender. Remove meatballs from broth. Strain broth and reserve 1 1/2 cups. Return broth to stove and bring to a boil. Beat egg yolks and egg with lemon juice and slowly whisk the hot broth into egg mixture. Return sauce to sauce pan and heat on low stirring until sauce thickens. Do not bring to a boil. Add meatballs and continue to heat until meatballs are hot and coated with sauce. As an alternative to the egg/lemon sauce, try doing this instead: Make a roux with butter and flour, add the chicken stock that you cooked the meatballs in, simmer, add some of the hot sauce to an egg yolk and then slowly stir the mixture back into the remaining sauce. Add lemon juice. Add the meatballs and simmer on low for a few minutes. Do not boil if using the egg yolk....See MoreInspiration Pics/Ideas needed for teen DD's room (B&W, turquoise)
Comments (17)shellfish: Oh, lovely room. That is right up my alley as well! I'm so envious of your space! I like the idea of the white coverlet which I may add in winter below the duvet. DD and I are still looking through the samples though lean towards a more saturated color like boxerpup's DS's room, then a lighter shade for the ceiling. Hope to narrow it down to a few paint samples to test on the walls. DD has little patience with me as I wanted to show her the inspiration pics. I'd rather she just pick a look she likes and let me narrow down the paint colors to 2-3 that match the one in a picture. That has always been my difficulty in doing her room--she just focuses on one aspect, the bedding, WTs or paint and not how they all look together in her room, with her floor and lighting. Unfortunately, there is not much that can be done in terms of room layout at present and it's not possible to remove just the head and footboard. It's a captain's storage bed with four drawers which she uses for her clothes. In another year my DS will most likely go away to college then I think I will let her move into his room which is a smidge larger and then we can do something similar to paintergirl's rendition. In which case I'll be repainting both rooms in a year's time. If it wasn't so hideous right now, I'd just wait another year, but she and I both hate it and the bedding and WTs can simply move to the other room when the time comes. I lvoe the paint color in the living room photo above and think DD would agree to that since it's so vivid. That B&W accents really seem to mitigate the intense shade as I'd hoped it would. Does anyone know what color that is?...See MoreMagnetic chalkboard wall paint ideas for kids room
Comments (3)I read the reviews of rustoleum magnetic paint and apparently it's a bit tricky to get an even coat. When I read that I decided if I was going to do a magnet wall (still uncertain) I would hang sheet metal on the wall then paint it the same colour as my wall. You could paint it the chalkboard colour you want and frame it with molding....See More- Emily H9 years ago
