Curb Appeal: Need help with Exterior
Comments (19)I like the way you drew the roof over the garage in your sketch, too. It gives me a better perspective of the proportions. The only thing I'm still wondering about is with the new roof right next to the main body of the house, it's quite a long line of the same roof. My first thought was a dormer on the addition, which I think would look good, but you made the point earlier that front door is on the other side of the house, and not wanting to compete with that, so I go back and forth. And I don't know about the middle of the house sandwiched between two peaks. Maybe there's a way with landscaping, or by adding something to the facade of the middle of the house, that would give the middle a little more dimension and break up the long lines? Although, sometimes it seems the better approach is to go with the horizontal lines and build on them, in which case the windows in the middle would look less split level and better proportioned to the length of the whole house if they were wider....See Morecurb appeal tips.. help pick color siding on this FLIP
Comments (11)Has your architect completed the new elevation design yet or are you bringing ideas to the architect? I assume you will be using one if you are removing the roof and putting on a third floor so you get the best design for your dollar. The house across the street looks great - hopefully when you finish your home it starts a trend in the area....See MoreLooking for some curb appeal, please help with design ideas

Comments (14)Thanks for all your feedback so far! My thought going into this project is similar to the before/after that Jan Moyer posted above. Something more than just replacing the siding and windows, but not a full scale change in elevation. We have about 20 houses in the neighborhood all in similar style, so I want to update it but not cause it to look out of place. There are two other houses with the garage/master like ours and both have one gable dormer. I think I just don’t like the scale of only one, two dormers or a larger shed dormer seems more appropriate. I do love the house already for its classic style, but I want to use the opportunity of the window/siding project to make any new modifications while everything is exposed. I have two builders in mind but neither have an architect on staff so that would be another piece to budget for if I hired one for a plan. I wasn’t sure if this scale of renovation would be too small of a project for an architect anyway. I have torn out all the 30 year old landscaping from the original owners so that will definitely be part of the master plan....See MoreDig Doug's Designs
