one more topic on crazy planting season.

I planted 7 Dunstan chestnuts around 6-7 years ago. All died except 3, and they are struggling. Well, the one that is struggling the most produced 6 empty nut cases this past season. Didn't see them on tree, found them scattered around tree about a month ago. It is the only one for a least 1/2 mile that I know of, so probably lacked pollination. But I recently planted the ???? chestnuts around this tee. Fingers crossed.

how big were they at planting .. and how did you plant ...

Well it was kinda a learning thing. They were about 3-4 ft. tall. From wallywold. I had been researching them for quite sometime and decided to make the drive to get them. Only certain walmart's carried them. I planted them kind of late in the season so I decided to build a large mote? around the trees. It worked good for the fist season, but after that all the dirt/clay (got from the pond when it dried up some) started to erode back into the root flare and when I finally realized what happened is when the tees were struggling. But I have removed all dirt from the root flare a and we will see what happens.

I think I planted them good. I always dig a bigger hole than needed, and I always rough up the sides. They probably sunk a few after a while. Lack of water is probably the biggest problem. They didn't get it as much as they should have.

I'm kicking myself for getting rid of that huge aquarium rather than turning it on end, now. Seriously. I just gave it away. What a fool I was! I'm really POed at DHL right now. I talked to a barely helpful person at "customer service" the other day about delivery options since I wouldn't likely be home to sign for my computer. I specifically asked if they deliver on Saturday since then (today) would be my best chance of being home. She flatly stated that, no, they don't deliver on Saturdays. I just got home to find a note that they'd been here ten minutes earlier. I wonder if it's even worth my effort writing to them and Dell. Oh, well. I'll get it Monday. Maybe I'll take it home with me at Xmas.

You know, I really need to give Epimediums a try. For some reason I just haven't been able to embrace that foliage. Seeing all of the favorable comments is making me rethink my ways. Glad to some of you others (not all apparently, lol, though I do agree they can be sort of Sci-Fi) like the Euphorbias. I've got 'Glacier Blue' and it does seem more vigorous than my old stand by 'Tasmanian Tiger'. I've got several green leaf and other species and hybrids in green and variegated forms ('Helen's Blush', 'Helena', and a few of the variegated lower creepers). They're just fun (to me anyway) and they really do have good year round interest. I've never had a seedling, but I do dead head them religiously, and do see them self-sowing in other gardens where people aren't as compulsive. You'll love your variegated Weigelia. I didn't really think about it but you're right: they're lovely in several seasons. I inherited a huge old one two gardens ago and used the foliage as filler in flower arrangements. About half of the stems would root in water and I'd just give them away. That plant looked great early spring through late autumn. Lemme check....hmm...yes, you're giving me a craving! Keep the suggestions and opinions coming. Besides the great suggestions, it's fun to hear who likes/dislikes what plants. Different strokes for different folks and that's what makes each of our gardens so fun. Take care, Grant also suggesting bergenia plants too which have interesting foliage (especially if you find the newer variegated forms) and interesting flowers (I know, it's Barbie Mattel pink more often than not, but hey, it's color and you can find some milder colors too).

yup finaly got it , box looked like it was runed over, lots of plants in perill, the pond plants are more mushi than green, the susies and puple cone flowers, well we have roots we will see..the roots on the daylilys were growing through the paper towels, but they are resilaint, some were just wraped in newspaper with no wet material, we will see on those too...with this heat i dont think half will make it...i was hoping it will rain but no monsoon on sight and i ran out of pots, well ill baby them and see what happens...and it wasnt sent priority.

wallyworld.. 3 to 4 feet ... in what.. a one gal pot.. lol ... what caliper.. how wide were the trunks ...???

ive had nut and conifer trees .. not produce nut or cone... for 10 to 15 years before they produced seed ... aka sexual maturity....

so ..... when you say they had empty seed cases ... that they were aborted ... im not sure we can say .... that maybe.. they just werent mature enough to go thru with it .. though they tried ... if you get my drift ...

in tree time.. one would hope.. after 6 or 7 years... they were over transplant shock and well settled in .... but that might not mean sexually mature ...

but then of course.. all the other cultural variable have to be taken into account.. as you note... drought.. cold.. heat .. etc.. etc ... [even a frost after a pollination that somehow stopped the process]

the more i learned.. the less i could figure out.. when it came to figuring out why ma nature.. and her trees do things ....;

its great stuff for navel gazing.. or while sitting around with adult beverages .... but i wouldnt come to any sure conclusions.. in fact.. with enough adult beverages.. and the resultant hangover.. i might have the same thoughts.. every friday night.. lol ..

in other words.. dont presume its all about lack of viable pollen ... maybe.. maybe not ...

it would be interesting.. if we had a hardcore old nut farmer.. tell us how long he expects before a newly planted tree/grove .. is commercially successful ... i would not be surprised if we were told.. 2 decades ...
