where to put the fridge . . .
Comments (21)Here is a lesson we learned on a 60" slider, which may translate to French doors. If both doors can be operated on the French doors, it won't matter. But a lot of French doors I see, only one door is made to be opened. If only one side is opened of a 60" door, it is NOT a 30" opening. In our case, the opening of our 60" slider is only about 22.5". This has been a pain many times. Most recently when my wheelchair bound grandfather was here and we could not get him outside onto the deck. If you do end up putting the fridge on the range wall and a pantry plus whatever (oven, MW, coffee) on the stairs wall, you could make your pantry a walk in pantry with the coat closet to the foyer only being behind the oven/MW/coffee area. Leave the interior pantry walls open to the studs and cut the shelving to fit around the studs. This will allow you to have shallow shelves on the left and the right, then deeper shelves on the back wall of the pantry. You can store a lot on shallow shelves and you can see everything at once. Much better to have everything lined up on the front edge than having to move the peanut butter to get to the can of Pam behind it to get to the bottle of olive oil behind it to get to the bottle of balsamic vinegar behind that. Bellsmom did this in her pantry. Here are some examples of her pantry and garage shelving to show what I mean. In these pics, you can see the studs and how the shelving is notched around the studs. Here is one where the shelves are even more shallow - only the depth of the studs. Comments (54)Beautiful kitchen!! I am just starting or should I say 6 months in the designing phase of a remodel. I have changed my mind so many times & very in decisive. I was sure I would go with a contemporary walnut slab cabinet. Changed my mind to white cabinets with the Calcutta marble with a wood island. It is really funny that I ran across your kitchen cause it has the x glass cabinets that I just decided on a few days ago and wood floors. I am meeting with the cabinet maker in a few days to go over the changes. After seeing your kitchen I am now sure I am making the right selections. I just voted for your kitchen, of course, it is the most stunning kitchen!!! Good luck!...See Morekitchen layout and cramped fridge area
Comments (4)I would simply put the refrigerator on the end of the range cabinet run, nest to the door leading to the covered porch. For symmetry, you could put a cabinet box around it, and make the pantry cabinet the same size. Then put a prep sink in the island, and you have the classic "kitchen triangle." For extra points. you have room to put in two dishwashers, on either side of the big sink under the windows. I would also pull the island out to the dashed line, indicating the vaulted ceiling. This gives you a wider corridor in the main sink area, which tends to be busy....See MoreMonogram fridge plug location vs SubZero
Comments (7)This "May" be a little late! I would stay away from GE Appliances due to: General Electric has sold its appliance business to Haier for $5.4 billion, a deal that will greatly expand the Chinese firm's footprint in the U.S. It is very likely that there will be transitional problems, possible inventory problems etc etc. I would certainly take the time to read reviews of GE appliances bought after about June of 2016. We too are debating whether to replace our Jenn-Air fridge with a Sub-Zero. The Jenn-Air had been trouble free, (No service calls) for 10 years. The icemaker did die after about 5 years but was widely available on-line, cheap ($135) and easily replaced by me, (Plug in). Unfortunately year 11 for the fridge has NOT been good, No compressor problems or expensive parts, but several calls for wild temp swings in Freezer and now a 2nd call for frost in freezer, and since the last "frost repair" we had to remove the top cover over the fridge to keep it from shutting down. Anyway, repair guy coming today, We giving him one last chance, replace anything that looks like it is or could be a problem, it breaks again it gets replaced by an SZ. We hate to replace it because of the fridge's wood panels, keeping it clean has been a "Non Issue" for 11 years now, WE hate to go back to Stainless Steel and the "Joy" of keeping that spotless!!! Why SZ you say? Simple Answer SERVICE!!!!! SZ has their own Service Dept. Jenn-Air does NOT have their own service nor does Whirlpool who Owns Jenn-Air, Kitchenaid, Maytag and who knows what else? So even though I searched extensively for the best service dept for my Jenn-Air Fridge, (Yelp Reviews, Yellow Pages Reviews, etc etc, and I probably found about the best there is as far as Jenn-air Service goes! Buttttt, Here is the way the company I picked, services Jenn-Air appliances. First You call them, it can take up to a week to get a return call, by the guy that is going to do the actual service. You describe "IN DETAIL" what the problem is. Still He comes out several days later and has a "look see". He then orders the parts, which usually takes another week, then returns with the parts and installs them. All this time the fridge is malfunctioning!!! Fortunately, being a "Techie" (Electronic Engineer), I've been able to keep the fridge running well enough to preserve the food. I removed the cover over the electronics to keep them cool, manually defrosted the freezer, removed a shield in the freezer so ice could not build up on it and block evaporator fan, turn power on/off many times, etc etc. Anyway tired of it , so I'm hoping , first of all The SZs does not break, 2nd, if it does , service will be prompt and parts needed replace on the FIRST SERVICE CALL, not the 3rd call or so !!!
