Help convert family room to formal living room!
Comments (5)Well -- start by clearing the room completely -- that move alone can really help you see the whole space in a new light or form! Also: what items do you currently have to furnish it? What do you need? How about painting the room? I like the rug -- and the shelves. Clear the shelves -- and simply add some books -- and modern clean-lined glass or silver/plate items -- like bowls. For a modern touch -- add a gallery of black-and-white photos -- mat alike and frame alike too. If you plan to keep the TV in the room -- then consider angling the unit into the corner at the left-hand side of the far window. Then step back and really look at the space -- would a sofa work against the wall where the computer desk now sits? Then add a couple of armchairs and an ottoman/long coffee table. Lots of lamps too. Maybe roman blinds at the windows....See MoreFront Room 13*13 sqft- formal dining/living combo, any ideas?
Comments (6)Even with a very narrow table of 36", you need 24" on either side to pull out chairs. That alone is 7', which only leaves you 6' for a sofa and coffee table. Your best bet is to lay out measurements of the sofa with blue tape and see what you have left for space. Is there a reason you need to fit both areas into one space?...See MoreNeed help with formal living room off of dining room
Comments (15)Candid! The first thing I saw in both rooms were the window treatments. The living room valances, although formal in design, are a dated look even for kitchens. The dining room drapes and swag should be framing the stage in a theater; they're just too heavy and dark. The red art in the dining room and the blue art in the living room are "off" elements in contrast to you furniture. The red ones might work in your kitchen, and the blue could theme another space. Dried floral arrangements and sticks as decor faded a long time ago. The living room rug should be as large as the one in the dining room. What to do... Here's a favorite house of mine and you have the furniture to pull off a similar look if you just simplify and get a larger rug and some side tables and a coffee table that are in scale with your other pieces. Click through the link with the photo to see other rooms in this lovely home. Brighten up your space by painting both rooms as below (believed to be Navajo White walls and White Dove Trim.) Consider wainscot for the dining room and a new chandelier. Updated window treatments that match in both rooms, larger rugs and less clutter would improve things. If you do paint, then removing all the tchotkes will happen anyway. Pack them up and only put them back judiciously....See MoreAre mismatched sofas a good idea in a small living room?
Comments (21)I think the two sofas look great together. I'd have them face each other instead of the L-shape configuration. Either put the two chairs on one end together or one on each end. While I think the contrasting pillows look good on the sofas, I'd limit it to one on each. Or if you use both then add a 3rd non matching pillow to mix it up. On the Green couch with the patterned pillows, at another solid pillow in front of one of the patterned ones. pick a cream color from the pattern....See Moredecoenthusiaste
