Sock bags can be dangerous if brought into close contact with certain cheeses. Same is true with socks, you never want to store your uneaten cheese in dirty socks. And some cheeses don't need that, they have that very smell naturally.

Edit to add - I seem to have a real attraction to cheeses with, shall we say, a profusion of aroma. With many types (like Camembert and Brie but many others too), the smellier and runnier, the better is the quality. Delicious!

Did a quick google, many articles showing this exact mystery warning for about the past 5 years and asking why. No definitive answers but the best I saw was on Reddit "Cheese needs to breathe"

Perhaps people have gone too far in their efforts to reuse, reduce and recycle and the company wants them to know that sock bags are not appropriated for storing cheese.

Oh good--it isn't just me that is puzzled! I wonder if storing other types of food in it would be safe (but I don't think I'll try it). Recipe instructions: put in a new sock bag for three hours...

Warning labels sure can be funny. The official brand warning label on one of those exercise stretchers insisted that safety goggles should always be worn when using the product. Yes, that would prevent eye injury if the band was stretched and one end released. But has anyone ever worn safety goggles while using a stretch band? I picture an exercise group with everyone sporting goggles...no, no I really can't. The only practicality of it is the legal protection for the company.

Yes, maybe it's something about porous cheese, absorbing the chemical makeup of the bag. I recently bought this pair of ankle rain boots, but not from Amazon. I already threw the tag out, which had the designer's name on one side and a warning on the other side. The warning said something like "This product abides by all U.S. consumer safety standards. California proposition warns that this product contains chemicals that are carcinogenic and can cause birth defects or reproductive cancer, if product is put in mouth or chewed.

The boots have the same feel/smell/look as all other rain boots I looked at, but were the only ones with that warning. I don't know if they used some horribly different chemical in theirs, or other manufacturers just don't include the warning. I have no problem keeping the rain boots, (which are extremely comfortable and flexible) as I don't intend to lick or chew on them, lol. I will however, keep them stored on an upper shelf, if a small child or pet that likes shoes/boots are visiting.

I don't see a typo, but I wonder if it is okay to re-use the bag to store a sandwich. My personal thought is that there is some noxious chemical in the bag (to preserve the socks) that should not be consumed, but if this is the case, then it should be kept away from all food - not just cheese.

I re-use plastic bags all the time to store food, but I have never used a bag that had clothing in it originally to store food. Those I try to recycle, if possible. I only use food bags for storing food.

I might store art supplies or pens in the bag you pictured, but probably not much else.

The real problem (in most places) is that most people have more plastic bags than they know what to do with.

I would assume the socks were made in China and putting cheese on the list is a language translation error. I have a friend that travels to Asia and she loves to send me the humerus translations on public signage.

I agree with Raye, hilarious things happen in translation. Take for instance, my dear departed MIL was German and every once in awhile she would try to tell a joke that I assume was very funny in German but when translated into English we would all be sitting there with this look on our face saying "is this the joke?". And then one time I decided use the translator online to translate something from English to German so that I could send a letter to someone in Germany. After I did that I took the translation in German and translated it back to English and it was so crazy I almost fell off my chair laughing! It made no sense at all! LOL!

Yes, language translations can be very funny! Going with a translate garble, any ideas what would be the stand in for the cheese since babies, children and pets are already listed? It must be just a single source for the warning mislabels, as all of the ones found online look the same.

I hope it does not point to the product being counterfeit. Amazon is not very good about policing those, and counterfeits can look convincing. The Amazon seller had excellent ratings, and the socks look to be of good quality. But they are weirdly long in the foot area. I was trying to find a substitute for my favorites, Balega, that now have an absurd $13 per pair price tag.

Back in the 90s, I ordered a hardware kit that included plans for a cabinet. It came from somewhere overseas, translation included. The box it came in was labeled "Hardware and Flan."

A few months ago I ordered a cheapo iphone case from Amazon, from a Chinese vendor.

It came with an insert with information about what to do if I didn't like the case and wanted to return it. The instructions were hilarious - something about if the case didn't allow me to pleasure myself, I should email them for further instructions and they would ensure I became fully satisfied.

I'm not that involved with my phone cases. :)

There is a blog called Languagehat.com and I would bet someone there could decipher this mystery as they are a group of linguistic specialists who chat with each other. They speak and understand all sorts of obscure and not so obscure languages and the connections between them. I gather the source of these various products is china and the translation to English was made there so there has to be an appropriate category that could be figured out if you knew Chinese(of which ilk?)
