Sounds like bad stuff and nothing to fool around with. I’m so sorry it happened to your DH. Still praying he responds quickly to the treatments he is given.

Hoping for a good outcome. There are some very scary infections. I had a very very hard time finally getting rid of staphylococcus infections after the flood. It took all of us washing constantly with hibiclens and keeping our surroundings sterile. It's so contagious.

I pray it is not the auras infection so many hospitals are keeping under wraps. I agree with Elmer, if what is causing the infection is know your husband has a right to know.

Elmer is correct you need that medical permission yesterday.

Until the culture shows what bacteria/bug is causing the infection the doctors are only giving an educated guess. It may not be a bacteria as some fungi can also cause infections. I had a bad rose thorn infection from the fungi that naturally occur on roses.

I missed your first post so just getting up to speed. I hope your husband is on the road to recovery. Will pray the antibiotics do their job. Have you both in my prayers.

Lucille you are right her husband has a right to know but without express permission from him she has NO legal right to know which is what Elmer was saying.

We have to be pro active! Insist on the Dr informing your husband what he is dealing with. If it's one of the highly contagious bugs you have a right to know! You are with him you can be exposed.

We aren’t ignorant people, we have all legal paperwork that is needed. Does no good if they don’t give you answers.

Very often (people are usually quite surprised at this) the doctors are never able to pinpoint the cause of an infection -- either the type of organism or just how it was acquired. Example: Strep pneumoniae -- the bug that is the most common cause of community acquired pneumonia and also other infections -- doesn't like to grow in culture, so treating for it is often based on an assumption (BTW there are 72 different strains of that particular bug, the Pneumovax vaccine protects against the 21 most common of them, Prevnar protects against 13.)

So I would be surprised that it is a case of they won't give answers, more likely they can't. Likewise, no one will be able to predict how quickly the infection will be controlled or eliminated or how long the wound will take to heal. Believe me, it is frustrating for them also.

Modern medicine still involves a lot of educated guessing.

Maybe it would be better to hear a doctor say "We haven't yet concluded exactly what type of infection this is, but we'll let you know as soon as we find out." When my DS was 12, he suddenly developed a horribly swollen, reddish purple ear, which the doctors thought was Necrotizing Fasciitis, commonly called 'flesh eating disease.' They told us that, and that they were treating him with an aggressive round of penicillin specific drugs.

When his ear showed no improvement with these drugs, they did further tests. They discovered he had shingles surrounding his eardrum, but no blisters on the outer ear, to clue them in, just a very infected looking, swollen outer ear. We felt their initial diagnosis was understandable, as shingles usually presents with blisters, and is uncommon in a 12 year old. Furthermore, they hadn't withheld any info. from us, as they'd told us we'd know better, as soon as they knew better.

My nephew-in-law is in the hospital now with an infection and it took several days for them to figure out what was causing it. Turned out to be strep. Apparently when dealing with infection it can take days to culture it. We are so used to getting instant results on things that we forget that sometimes it just takes time. It's scary when it involves infection because so much damage can be done while they are trying to figure it out.

Teri, I hope you get an answer at some point but it's possible they may not have an exact answer, at least not right away. The doctors told my nephew-in-law there was no way to determine exactly HOW he got the infection. Scary stuff for sure. I hope he gets relief and medicine that takes care of this very soon. Prayers for you both.

He is home! It’s a staph infection. Hopefully he is on the mend. Thank you all so very much for the kind thoughts and prayers. They are appreciated.

Home is Good! Out of the germ factory! We know a man who spent most of a year overcoming an infection he got when he went for a blood test!

Good news! Always better out of a hospital than in a hospital!

Get lots of hibiclens and everyone in the house use it every time you bathe or shower! Wash bedding, clothing etc with bleach. I had to go through these procedures multiple times with the recurring staph infections! Once I got it down and understood the importance of everyone following the protocol we were able to completely rid it from our selves and home. (some people are carriers) CVS and Walgreens do have their own brand of the hibiclens which is a little cheaper and works great. I still keep it in my shower and use it from time to time. I hope to never experience another staph in my life! The last one was the size of a large grapefruit in my thigh.

Staph is NORMAL found on the skin. Can become a problem when the surface of the skin is broken (e.g., wound, incision). Using antibacterial soaps unnecessarily may contribute to the major health problem of antibiotic resistance we are seeing.

I'm sorry I'm just getting in on this thread but please know you both have my good thoughts and prayers for a full and speedy recovery.

My instructions were from my infectious disease specialist after I had experienced 5 staph infections one after the other. We had to go through a strict decolinization process. I had to take 3 different strong antibiotics at the same time. I was so worried I would end up with c-diff from that.

Anyway those directions were exactly what was given to us and it worked thank God.

I think mdln said using antibacterial soaps UNnecessarily was a problem. raven. It sounds like you were fighting a severe and maybe even life-threatening situation and were using it under the direction of your expert.

That having passed for you, and for others, the use of antibacterial soap is thought to have contributed to the evolution of superbugs now immune to most antibiotics and that's why the accepted advice is to NOT use it regularly. Only in extreme situations such as you had. I trust you've recovered and thankfully so.
