Sunbrella v. Crypton

I'm choosing between Sunbrella and Crypton fabrics for a new t.v./playroom couch. I understand the technical differences between them, but does anyone have a sense of a real-life comparison? Does one wear better? Does one work better than the other in terms of preventing staining? Is one more cleanable?

The wearability of Crypton fabrics is going to vary since they can be made from different fibers and vary in weave. Sunbrella is all made from acrylic, which isn't the softest fabric option. One main difference is that the moisture-resistance of Sunbrella is from a treatment (like scotch-guard) that eventually wears off whereas the Crypton treatment stays put. You should also consider Inside Out fabrics - these are a softer alternative to Sunbrella with a lifetime moisture resistance. They also feel a lot better.

We have a linen weave crypton and I thought it was done for when my toddler smeared on a full tube of dark lipstick on it. I was told when trying to order a replacement cushion to at least try cleaning it. It cleaned off completely! I have also cleaned off countless coffee spills from my husband and years later it looks great.

You can go on Joanne's website and search for Crypton. Link below. There are a number that are on sale now at half off. And the starting prices seem lower than on the Crypton website or on 'designer' websites. The 25% coupon is there on the right side of the page. Good only through today. But the offer does come back now and then - fori is right about that. In their stores there is often a 40% or 50% off sale for one cut of fabric. Other sites have Crypton for way less than you were quoted. DIYupholsterysupply.com has a huge selection, overhwelming really, at around $30 - $38 a yard. No Crypton currently in their closeouts ;( Newtoto.com has some great pricing on Crypton, $10-15 a yard, but maybe only 80 or so selections to pick from. Great deal if they have something you like. Smaller remnants of several yards are as low as $7 a yard. Good for a chair or chair seats. They send free samples promptly, and offer a $4 color chart so your take on the color is more accurate (Brilliant idea! I bought one). Warehousefabricsinc.com has good pricing and selection but more for drapery weight. I haven't figured out how to search for Crypton there. Schindlersfabrics.com also has good selection, especially higher end stuff, but again not the easiest to navigate if you are looking for something specific. I've never experience Crypton on furniture, only dog beds. You do realize the fabrics do not breathe, so built in breathing holes need to be installed or else you'll be trying to sit on puffy cushions. The dog begs DD2 purchased did not have air vents, and became very puffy. She had to leave unzipped a bit for the dogs to get on them - especially her tripod dog, who ended up inside the bed and they all eventually were eaten by another dog.

I have 3 sets of Ballard covers. 2 twill and one a ticking fabric. All are great construction and fabric. Have been washing them for 6 years without any issue. Some spot cleaning prior to washing. The pillow covers won't need ironing, they fit tight. Full cover may need a quick iron, but if you put them on slightly damp it is easier and then stretch out. Also recently bought a steam machine for clothing. Not the type for carpets and upholstered furniture. Just point it at the fabric and it steam irons. Use it on my bedding also, takes wrinkles away quickly. I love tailored covers and change with the season. My covers were bought using the dimensions of Ballad furniture, the furniture I have is not Ballard. Yet, they fit as wanted. Just a note about the current chair in picks. Have one and the only issue is where people tend to set their elbows. Mine has sunk down in this area. May have to cut in and add some bulk.

I ordered a four-seasons crypton fabric sofa. Had the sofa for three days. My husband was wearing black nylon golf pants and the dye transferred onto the sofa seat and the skirt (back of legs). It did not wash out. The store we bought the sofa from also tried to clean it, to no avail. This fabric may be great in many ways, but ironically Crypton does NOT warrant against dye transfer! I was not informed such a thing could happen (I’ve owned many sofas in my time). I am hoping because the sofa was brand new, the company will replace the cushion seat and skirt (slip covered sofa). I believe the fabric is called Mina Snow. I say, go with non Crypton fabric!

i’ve read that Sunbrella prevents sun fading best , while Crypton is best for staIns. I’m having our family room sofa done in a Kravet Crypton. I tested a scrap of it with garden dirt and grass ( dogs) , and red wine. (Wow, Esther! Lipstick is impressive! ). All washed off perfectly with dish detergent. Never heard of Inside Out. Will look for it . Softer would be nice in living room.

This is so helpful, thank you all. I just looked at and felt my samples more closely, and the Sunbrella is indeed not as soft as the ones that are Crypton and Inside Out. Which is unfortunate, because the color I was leaning toward for my t.v. room is Sunbrella, but I'd much rather know now and reselect than be disappointed that it's not soft.

I read a suggestion of testing fabric softness on your face or upper arm. Our hands don't respond as much as our cheeks or arms! I am also in the process of choosing a crypton fabric. I'd LOVE a cream or off white (years and years of chocolate colored sofas) but I'm scared! We have a bird who poops every 20 minutes, an old dog and we are generally messy humans. :D I have some samples on the way and plan on doing some dirty work just to make sure a lighter sofa won't make me crazy long term! If anyone has feedback on lighter colored crypton fabric I'd love it!
