Can one stain 'New' Red Oak to match 'Old' Red Oak?
Comments (16)"Can one stain 'New' Red Oak to match 'Old' Red Oak?" This is tuff to do. When we do a repair in an old Vancouver Home I often use some Shellac first and then top coat with Polyurethane. The shellac gives me the aged look or yellowing and the two seam to work well together. Some times we tint the top coat a little. Judgement calls since sunlight and time will yellow the top coat so making it look right now might make it look wrong in a year........See MoreNeed paint color help for built-ins
Comments (5)I agree also and no, I don't want it to be too dark. I was thinking that with the back of the shelves being white and the walls maybe being Believable Buff, that it wouldn't be too dark but I think you're right, it's still a bit dark, especially since our area rug has a lot of black in it. Would it look strange to have the top light and the bottom dark? I was also considering staining the mantle and arch above the mantle the color of the floor and doing the rest in the white. Aaaghhh! So many choices!...See MoreRed Oak vs. Northern Red Oak
Comments (9)They are probably referring to the same thing. If you are in the Midwest most people will say Red Oak but if you look at a Quercus rubra tag in the nursery the common name will be listed as Northern Red Oak. In my experience Red Oak (or NRO) is quite variable in fall color but usually gives a decent display. I prefer many of the white oak hybrids like Prairie Stature, Forest Knight, etc... as they are more resistant to oak wilt and still give a nice color display in the fall. Growth rate of the red oak group as a whole is typically quicker than that of the white oak group. If your soil is acidic enough also think about trying Quercus ellipsoidalis or Quercus coccinea, both of which tend to have excellent fall color....See MoreRed Oak + Weathered Oak Duraseal = HELP!!! So red & pink!
Comments (9)Karen, I love it. You have helped me decide on the stain for our red oak. We have white oak upstairs and red oak downstairs. After seeing your floors and Chris Loves Julia’s white oak in Duraseal’s “weathered gray”, I’m sold. Like you, I thought I wanted the on trend natural white oak look but, in reality, it lacks the warmth that I want in my home. Yours is both light and warm!...See MoreUser
