Butterflies and Caterpillars Still Here
Comments (30)Yes, Ron, I love blue curls. They grow around here already, but they're not very common, so I'm glad to get the seeds. I love the delicate intricacy of the flowers, and blue is my favorite flower color. On our last night before returning home from Georgia, we stayed in a hotel in Thomasville, GA. There were some plants that looked like they'd be butterfly favorites growing in a wet area close to our room, alongside cypress and willow trees, and the fact that they were blooming in late November impressed me. I suspected right away that they were Bidens alba, a plant that is supposed to be invasive, so I'd nixed planting it here before. But seeing that it mainly thrives in sandy soil, I'm thinking it might be limited by the heaviness of my soil. I took two cuttings, but them in a styrofoam coffee cup with a top to keep the water from spilling, brought them home, and put them in rooting containers. The cuttings have remained erect since I cut them, so maybe they'll root, even though my house isn't really warm enough to promote root formation. I'm thinking that this plant may be vigorous enough to root anyway. I took this picture of the flowers - The flowers were just too cute for me to resist. Comments (12)We have a bed each of yellow summer squash and cucumbers planted in black plastic. We planted them a couple of months ago. The squash plants are starting to form little fruits, about 3 inches long right now. We put a row cover on them and they have survived some low temps: one night of 31 degrees, and a couple of 35 degree nights, many nights in the upper 30s. The row cover creates a warmer environment during the day so they grow faster. In the portion of the bed that doesn't have row cover, the plants are about 5 inches tall. Under the cover, the plants are about 24 inches tall. Makes a huge difference! The uncovered plants were killed back by the frost but some of them are putting out new growth so the roots obviously weren't killed. Our daytime temps have been in the 50s for a week or more and the plants are growing well. The row covers have been in place for about three weeks now. We need to uncover the cukes during the day for pollination. Our honeybees are still out and about during the day. This week is supposed to have highs in the 60s. In spring we keep row covers on our eggplant to protect them from flea beetles. It makes them grow much larger and faster. We take the covers off when the plants start to bloom....See MoreShow us your gardens - a photo thread - March 2014
Comments (38)The garden is slowly emerging from the snow, but it is pretty homely at this time of year, with just a little bit of green, and a lot of dirty snow and dead stalks that I didn't get cleared out last fall. By the front of the house From Early spring 2014 The large perennial bed along the old barn foundation From Early spring 2014 The big bed at the shop From Early spring 2014 I look at the vole tracks in the melting snow and cringe when I think of the damage they must have done, but I can't see enough to know yet. From Early spring 2014 The stream is in full flood from the rain (all our recent storms have been rain, even when MA residents got snow.) From Early spring 2014 From Early spring 2014 The big field doesn't look nearly as lovely during mud season with its piles of muddy manure and areas of slushy melt water. From Early spring 2014 I know that this messy stage will only last a week or two, and I am enjoying the daytime temperatures in the 50's....See MoreCalifornia members, how are you
Comments (31)From far away, I'm looking at the Monterey/Salinas papers and TV stations. Our old house in Carmel Valley is right at the edge of the Carmel Fire evacuation area, and the neighborhood is now on alert. We lived there for 13 years, 1985-1998, and all I can see in my heart are all the people and places and sights in this amazing little community. There have been fires way farther up the valley in the past, but nothing more than a 2 or 3 acre spot fire close to us. And I've known many many people who live in the evacuation area of the River Fire. I spent a lot of time up the in Santa Cruz mountains, going back many year to when I li ved in Palo Alto, and again, thoughts of Big Basin, "Little Basin", and all the mountain communities. We went to the beaches north of Santa Cruz and visited Bonny Doon and Davenport, and often drove up to Pescadero. All doomed, I fear. I am heartbroken and fear for all old friends, going back 50 years, and the ghosts of my life....See Moreoursteelers 8B PNW
