How do I start getting organized to move into new house?
Comments (21)Have you looked into items and spaces that will make life easier once you move in? Such as shelves in the laundry room, where you'll put the kitchen garbage pail, etc. I wanted to dwell on this point a little more, too. That you should focus on setting up the INFRASTRUCTURE you will need. I love infrastructure--we often ignore it, esp. stuff like shelving, etc. Be sure you have hooks for brooms, enough shelves int he closets (in any closet w/ shelves, seriously consider adding ONE MORE shelf) Then, you can decide what you want to put there. "Gumball Rally" is what I thought it was.And that's a great philosophy for lots of situations. Gloria, we're contemplating a move down the block, and my DH was saying "no need to pay movers except for the piano and the couch; we can just carry it down." Over my dead body! We've got 2 kids, and 4 people's worth of stuff. Last time we moved, I nearly killed one of his friends (who was helping us but wouldn't listen to me) out of frustration. I told DH then, we are never moving ourselves again. It is just TOO HARD. And, that same friend moved, w/ DH helping, and he packed some, moved some, etc. It's VERY inefficient. MUCH more efficient to pack everything, truck it over in ONE trip (get as big a truck as you need), and then unpack. I suppose 4 doors away doesn't require a truck, but it'll use a handcart, and major packing. I've really learned mylesson from watching those friends. Pack everything before you move ANYthing....See MoreNew Windows for Whole House - Where do we start?
Comments (9)This is a copy/paste since the same question keeps coming up. This info relates to both the people who make the window and the people who install your windows. I have been answering the same question over and over again on Home Improvement web-sites, which window is the best. Most window buyers have no idea how to rate a window company. Rating windows is not as easy as saying one is better than the other one. Consider these things when rating windows: Looks- which window looks the best to you the owner. Does the window look good viewed from both the inside and the outside? Function- does the window meet your needs? Do you want the sashes to tilt in for easy cleaning? Options- does the window company offer the options that you need? How about colors, windows are now sold in several different color both on the inside and the outside. Window screen are now available with several different options. Maintenance- do you want a window that is easy to clean and does not require any painting or staining? Warranty- how long is the warranty that they offer? Will the company be around to honor the warranty? Does the warranty cover labor? Is the warranty pro-rated? Do you have to buy replacement parts at an inflated price? NFRC ratings- Do you care about how good the glass is? Do you understand the benefits of triple pane glass? Do you know the differences between the different spacers? Do you know about Argon gas or Kyrpton Gas? Customer service- will the company handle your window issues in a timely manner. If one of your sashes (glass) breaks how long will it take to get you a new one. You should check the BBB reports, and several of the other on-line complaint databases to get a feel for what people are saying about a company. Comments (2)Any kind of multi shower heads or body sprayers? City water or well? If well, any iron? A simply formula is hardness x usage x # of people x 7 days. So 14 x 65 X 4 X 7=25,480 grain removed every 7 days. With a 1.5 CF softener you will have 30,000 grain capacity to work with....See MoreNew to me home...where do I start?
Comments (10)Thanks all. Funny, I'm so used to living in 1k square feet in Boston, I have no idea what the rest of the country views as normal. I'm excited to have a proper spare bedroom, home office/3rd bedroom and a workout room/4th bedroom! Nice thing with old houses, not a nickle of wasted space. Artwork is one of those emotional buys for me. I wander by, I see, I buy. It's never planned. Particularly now, I don't think I'd feel comfortable cruising thru art galleries. But I get the idea. Great idea about the notebook. I also need to inventory my stuff. 1/2 of my hard furniture was never unpacked from the move and is still in moving blankets. I think I know what I have :) I do have Home Architect software somewhere, I'll have to dig it up, thank you for the layout suggestion. I LOVE designing. And I have used the painters tape layout trick on a previous kitchen :) Luckily, all 4 baths (2 of which I will almost never use) are in great shape and I think only need towels and smallwares. But I'll check. Kitchen will be a renovation point 2-5 years down the line, so I'm probably not even going to bother painting, it's fine. I'll ignore it for now. Good point about the furniture. I only buy the good stuff now that I'm an adult. I've been reading up on the Keeping Room forum. I only wish Schnadig was still in business. My last couch from them (a hand me down) lasted almost 20 years. God I loved that couch. Since artwork will be later, sounds like color scheme, then rugs, then LR furniture. I think it's the LR that I may need new rugs....I'll be excited to unwrap them in the new house..they will look stunning against the floors :) I also read prioritize public spaces and bedroom first. I risk getting paint on the refinished HWF in 2 of the bedrooms, but so be it. Keep 'em coming! Thank you PS...Great idea about the color palette. Using Adobe Color to hone in on some palettes. Fun stuff....See Morerobo (z6a)
