Moss spreading fast.. how do I control

Live in RI. Have been having moss issues since last season. I have used Moss Out and tried other things as well. It has taken over more than half of my yard. My backyard has been infected more than my front yard though I see it there now. How do I best control/eliminate the moss and get my lawn back on track. It is still early and I am hoping to get something going this season. Any advice would be much appreciated.

What is your watering regimen? How often and for how long do you water?

Have you applied any fertilizer in the past year? If so when and what kind?

Have you applied any herbicide, insecticide, or fungicide in the past year? If so when and what did you use?

Moss grows for any of these reasons - soil is compacted and low in nutrients, drainage is poor and the soil stays wet (drought can have a similar impact), excessive shade or soil pH is out of whack (too acidic or too alkaline). All the same reasons turf grasses are unable to thrive. You can use Moss Out or any other moss removal product for a quick fix but it will be temporary at best until you address and correct the underlying conditions.

Lawn care practices can influence moss development as well.

Although my beds look nice, next time I build raspberry beds I will leave them isolated from other beds. As with Scott, mowing works for me, but presently they are going in other beds, which is the problem. The good news is I should get well over 1000 berries this year! Yeah!! My first black raspberries, looking forward to them. Speaking of which keep it quiet but Nource Farms has Niwot primocane fruiting blacks, probably not on web site, but a fellow poster here, got an order in. Selling in lot's of 5 for $24.50. I have one from Henry Fields (sold out now) in ground doing well. very small though, i should have waited for Nourse! I paid about that for one 2 inch plant! I just want it to grow enough to survive next winter. I don't expect any fruit this year, even though primocane, they thing is just too small, and others I have had that size did not fruit first year. Like Double Gold. I will get my first crop in the 3rd season Argh! Planted fall of 2012, primocanes were too late last year, frost came before berries ripened! Now floricanes look excellent and should give me a large summer crop! I'll get my first crop this year on some summer bearers, Taylor, Cascade Gold, Honey Queen, and Encore. Lot's of blackberries too, it's going to be a good year!

I planted a 2 gallon division spring of '05. It started as a single culm about 2 feet tall. Now there are five culms between two feet and three feet. I'm excited to see how it does this year (hasn't begun shooting yet). In the two summers since it was planted, it sent out a rhizome ten feet long. This is only one rhizome I know of (because it poked out of the ground at its tip), so it could have spread that same distance in more than one direction. Also one of my more hardy varieties. Almost no leaf loss at all this winter. My P. nuda and P. rubro. both had ~50% leaf loss and my P. nigra henon was killed to the ground (I expected that since this was its first winter in the ground for me). Enjoy your bamboo!

I have some semps growing in my kitchen window right now, they were split off of my sister's Mama plant. I may keep a couple inside, but most of them are going outside as soon as I get a planter for them. They seem to be okay so far (it's been about a month), couldn't say for long term. Also, I couldn't help but laugh when you asked about the cobwebs, I had accidentally left a Semp my aunt gave me at my Mom's house until a couple of days ago. When my Mom asked this morning if I had taken it (she, I dunno, thought that it had gotten fed up waiting and left, perhaps?), she thanked me for taking it, saying the spiderweb on it was giving her the heeby-jeebies. I told her that was part of the plant, that it was called a Sempervivum arachnoideum, because it looked like it had a spider web on it, and SHE DIDN"T BELIEVE ME! It took me ten minute to convince her, and I think she still has doubts. Hopefully my sister will be able to fully convince her that our plants have not been infested by spiders! :-) Good luck with your semps, I love mine. Any plant with a Latin name that means "always living" is my kind of plant!

They do not spread. They can be a little tricky here, not liking our hot, humid summers. East-facing sounds good, if it gets some full sun early in the day, and some shade from the hotter, mid-day sun.

@ dchall_san_antonio I just bought the house last year and the there is no sprinkler system which could probably mean wasn't watered enough prior to that.. but can't say. I watered it twice a week. Plenty of trees around so there are areas where there is no sunlight. Could that be a possible reason? I have no idea.

gardengal48 (PNW Z8/9) - I used Moss out once and it doesn't seem to have done the work. I will probably need to have my soil checked out.

Moss Out for Lawns generally works very fast when applied according to directions......typically just a matter of hours before the moss turns black and is dead. You still need to rake it out, however.
