How to control Raspberry spread?

My Heritage Raspberry bush does quite well. To keep it in bounds I have been digging out the violators and giving them away. Of course this makes a mess of the grass and I have set up everyone who wants them. There is the commonly seen plastic edging with the round top, I only find that in 4" depth. Is that enough for Raspberry runners? I can get something from the sheet metal shop if deeper is needed. Any issue with the galvanizing in in the soil regards to organic or etc ?

I have to constantly dig out runners. I guess if one keeps cutting them they will give up? My raised bed is 12 inches high, and they have no problem going down 12 inches to escape into the lawn or other beds. So 12 inches isn't enough. They not only have to go down 12 inches, they have to come up 12 inches to emerge in the other beds, Seems they have no problems doing that.

I grow Boyne and also a yellow variety (maybe Honeyqueen?). Both put out lots of runners, I just dig them out or cut them off, as required. You could switch to one of the non-suckering varieties. Or just accept the runners as free plants to fill in any holes in the row.

It would be a big experiment, here are some estimates: The plants should be under bright light for at least half the hours the sun is up in your location, this will vary by season. A fan will be required to create air movement near the plants. Temperatures should be between 60 and 80 degrees. During the winter the temperature needs to be between 32 and 45 degrees for several hundred hours, spread over many weeks. Perhaps you can find a variety that does not require this chilling phase. The plant does not re-flower, it is removed after all fruit is done and the new canes that sprouted are used for next year, those will bloom in the spring. If you are actually starting from seed, this will take several years. The amount of electricity required will make these berries very expensive, unless you are keeping your basement lighted up like high noon for other purposes.

The best way I've found to keep them in check is get out your mower. Mulching like crazy can help too - I use pine needles, but even that doesn't always work. Regular mowing eventually keeps them down, but I've seen shoots come up as far as 6-8 feet away, so you might have to increase your space between rows. I space rows atleast 10 feet apart and mow in between every couple of weeks.

It works, but the trench needs to be renewed each year. I find mounding the center a couple of feet also helps. Growing bamboo near trees also lessens the spreading. Shade tolerance varies and you want to find a happy medium.

How to treat & prevent Anthracnose in Blackberry & Raspberry

As I was pruning and thinning out my blackberries the last few weeks, I noticed a lot of splotchy canes, various sized spots with some peeling bark and generally unhealthy looking appearance. I sent some samples into our plant path diagnostic lab and unfortunately they determined my canes are infected with anthracnose. Most of my plants had some signs of the disease, so based on their recommendations, I removed all of the floricanes. I was advised to clean all old cane debris from the area and use Abound (Azoxystrobin) to prevent or control any future infection on new primocanes this year. If the plants were still dormant (which they aren't) and I could find lime sulfur, (which I could not) it was also recommended to use that. I could really appreciate advice from any of you who have successfully dealt with anthracnose, how you handled it, what you used, etc. What strategies should I use to prevent it from reoccurring on the blackberry primocanes that are starting to come up now? On top of dealing with it in the blackberry patch, I have about 40 new raspberry plants due to arrive in a few weeks, and their new raised beds are located very near some of the blackberry beds. How do I prevent it spreading to the new raspberry plants I will be planting soon? Abound is way to expensive for me to purchase at this point, (~$200/gal) but I was told other fungicides such as Captan probably wouldn't do the job. Any viable options? Thanks!!

They sell 1' borders that I know works for some people. It may not work in combination with raised beds since those have such loose soil; by 1' down in normal soil things are getting pretty high on the clay scale and not where raspberry roots go.

I keep that cheap ground timber lumber around my bed and mow off any growing out of it. There is no extra work because the lawn mower does it all in the course of doing its regular job.

Although my beds look nice, next time I build raspberry beds I will leave them isolated from other beds. As with Scott, mowing works for me, but presently they are going in other beds, which is the problem.
The good news is I should get well over 1000 berries this year! Yeah!! My first black raspberries, looking forward to them. Speaking of which keep it quiet but Nource Farms has Niwot primocane fruiting blacks, probably not on web site, but a fellow poster here, got an order in. Selling in lot's of 5 for $24.50. I have one from Henry Fields (sold out now)
in ground doing well. very small though, i should have waited for Nourse! I paid about that for one 2 inch plant!
I just want it to grow enough to survive next winter. I don't expect any fruit this year, even though primocane, they thing is just too small, and others I have had that size did not fruit first year. Like Double Gold. I will get my first crop in the 3rd season Argh! Planted fall of 2012, primocanes were too late last year, frost came before berries ripened! Now floricanes look excellent and should give me a large summer crop! I'll get my first crop this year on some summer bearers, Taylor, Cascade Gold, Honey Queen, and Encore. Lot's of blackberries too, it's going to be a good year!
