wiring new house: speakers, cat5, TV stuff
Comments (5)You'll need an amp that can power any/all of the speakers, and some sort of impedance matching component to put between your amp and the speakers so you don't burn out your amp driving those speakers. The impedance matching device can either be an impedance-matching speaker selector box that you can locate where all the speaker wires home run to, or you can install an impedance matching volume control in each room of your house. With ethernet and computers there are myriad options out there. But on a low budget, you can hardwire the house with a few spools of 14ga speaker wire, which is DIY, ceiling or wall speakers, which are DIY, your existing stereo (if the amp is up to snuff), and the aforementioned impedance matching device. If you install volume controllers for each room, they are DIY install and are about $30-$40 each. Tangent alert: I just bought a Sonos setup. Started with a 2-unit set-up, then once I gave it a trial run, I bought three more components. I absolutely love it, and use the 5 components to play music in 7 rooms. The same or different music in each room. With Pandora and Rhapsody, I think my two 400-CD jukeboxes may not be seeing much action. The Sonos remotes are fabulous. I also downloaded a free application to use an iTouch as a controller, but it's not as nifty as the Sonos remote....See MoreElan Home System Speaker buzz

Comments (16)I have Elfa ventilated shelves (and some drawers) in my pantry and laundry room both. I love them BUT I use liners so I don't have the wobbly issue going on. That would drive me crazy. Elfa's ventilated shelves, unlike what you can find at Lowe's, HD or Ikea, have the wires a lot closer together. They also "lock" into place so the wire part is sitting really firmly in the bracket - not just a piece of wood sitting on top of the shelf bracket. As far as organizing little things, Elfa has "shelf baskets" that you can put dividers in and stack stuff in if need be. In the pic below, I have one of those on the immediate left (3 shelves up) and above the counter top oven in the back. I use it for bags of baking stuff like chocolate chips, coconut, etc on the left and treats in the back. And I absolutely love their big drawers. Container Store's return policy is great too - anytime with a receipt and the best Elfa sales is 30% off all Elfa products. It starts Dec. 24th and goes through the end of January typically. There is one in the fall that isn't as good - 25% of Elfa Shelving. (No, I don't work for Container Store, I am just a big fan and will be buying some more Elfa stuff during their Dec. sale.) Comments (5)It is very smart to have the pre-wire done as part of the build process. It will save you time and headache later. Origin Acoustic speakers are great. One of the most / only innovative speaker company's around. I don't know which model, but all of their speakers are very good (just make sure they are not the "contractor series". Wired is always better than wireless. There are no true wireless 5.1 speakers systems. They all require power and that means wires will show VS in-ceiling speakers where no wires show and you will barely notice the speakers visually. Not sure you need connection to your "VCR". But you do want wires run to make sure the cable box and the surround sound receiver and amplifiers for the house audio can be in the same location with wires running to the TV location (preferably 1 cat 6, 1 cat 6 shielded, 1 fiber optic wire) With this wiring set up, you can call any local professional (audio, video / home automation / home theater company) who can make sure you are up and running....See Morewacokid
