How to choose a new flapper (among other questions)

I've watched several YouTube videos on diagnosing a leaky toilet. They make the diagnosis and fix sound easy, but I'm beginning to wonder about that. I'm pretty sure the water has been running into the toilet bowl. I let about 4" of water into the tank and then turned off the water. It started draining out immediately, I assume through the flapper valve.

The flappers in the videos were pliable rubber. The valve in my toilet is hard plastic. The toilet is a Kohler, about 15 years old. I assume the flapper is the original part, but I'm not certain of that. I tried wiping the edge of the flapper and the ring it closes on. I didn't notice any debris, and the toilet still leaks.

Does it seem likely I need a new flapper? If so, how do I know which one to buy? There seems to be a multitude of different Kohler flappers on the market.

Thank you for your help!
