Advice on staining pine porch ceiling

We are going to install pine tongue and groove ceiling to the porch of my barn and I’m definitely wanting to get the wood stained before they put it up. What steps do I need to take? I have read the wood needs conditioned first prior to stain. What type of condition and is it spread on by a rag or painted on with brush? Then, what type of stain and how many coats? I also want a shiny/glossy finish. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

What type of wood is it? That will determine if it needs a wood conditioner. Stain will not give you a shiny/glossy finish, that would be an exterior grade polyurethane or waterbourne sealer.

It's not like conditioner is required. It's just an optional step that you can use to help get the stain to apply more evenly because it fills in all the deep areas of the grain. If it is car siding, part of the character of the wood is its uneven look. The best way to stain is with a staining pad of synthetic wool because they have handles. You put the stain on and wipe off the excess. After that, you will need at least two coats of some exterior grade finish in satin or semi-gloss depending on your preference for how shiny you like it. You will need to sand in between coats so that the final finish is smooth.

Hi Lola! Depends in part on what specie/color of wood you used..... That looks like pine so you could probably use a clear oil like Messmer's UV+ and accomplish the same thing. It will darken the wood a little bit and bring out/maintain the natural colors. If you have any boards left over, to get a very specific color, have the person who will be applying it for you create a couple samples and test it on small swatches until you find the one you're looking for. The knotty pine is beautiful, especially in the ceiling. They look to be in very good condition. Is this a family room? If so, I wouldnt do anything until after you have lived in there for a while. You may decide you really like it. If you really think you want to paint it, after you have lived with it for a few months, it can always be painted later. Its hard to tell from the pictures, but, the floors appear to be in decent condition too, and the little bit darker than the walls. They do go good with the knotty pine. Congratulations on your new vintage home. Please keep some of that vintage character. You can always remove, but, you can never put it back, like it was.

Thank you RES 3D. And everyone. I appreciate all of the feedback....even the things no one wants to hear. The spots are actually from sap. After the first board appeared spotted, I inspected them closer as I was moving along. I plan to bring everything I’ve learned straight to the paint store. Good thing is...I have a handy trim carpenter at my disposal. If it turns out to be a total bust, it’s still worth the tens of thousands we saved not having a builder and putting in a little elbow grease PS- I have a whole new respect for builders...and the construction market in general! We’ve encountered FABULOUS tradesmen along the way. This porch ceiling looks amazing so for now I plan to completely enjoy it before it’s possible demise!
