Compost bin vs vermicomposting
Comments (14)I have both a Worm Factory (with 7 trays) and an outdoor compost bin (actually a 3-bin system). I started vermicomposting 2 years ago, and it is great for small amounts of kitchen scraps (it takes a long time for there to be enough worms to work quickly). I like having the worm bin mainly because I want the vermicompost, but there's no way I could put all of my kitchen scraps in it (too many scraps causes a very stinky mess). When I was researching what type of outdoor composter would work for me (I needed a system where I could add kitchen scraps & chicken litter on a daily basis), the bin seemed like the best fit. It was my understanding that the tumbler works best when you don't add to the contents of the original material to be composted, although I could've totally misunderstood....See MoreMaggots in the compost bin IN MY KITCHEN
Comments (21)Lots of mouthy answers. I got tired of the criticism and judgmental remarks and stopped reading. Many of us dont have time to go out to the compost pile everyday, or, smh, twice a day. Here are a few remedies or solutions. I apologize if others gave these answers, as I said, I got tired of the rudeness. 1...maggits cannot survive boiling water. Put in your kitchen bucket, wait a min. for them to die, then pour all into your outdoor bin. You use water outside in your compost, so this will work fine...just be sure its not hot when you pour it out so that you dont kill your compost bins worms. If you use bleach, the scraps then must go in the trash, which defeats the goal. 2...clean compost bin in the kitchen thoroughly, then without drying, pour lime into your kitchen bin. Lime is great for your cimpost, but flies will not lay eggs there anymore. A dusting of lime is all that is needed. Niw, yiu have a way to compost kitchen scraps maggit free....See MoreRed Wigglers in Outdoor Compost Bin?
Comments (24)Some worms will always move toward fresh food, but all worms will move away from light. If you remove the compost one thin layer at a time, go away for a bit and come back and remove the next layer, the worms will continually dive down until you have a very worm-enriched bottom layer left which you can then relocate at will. When harvesting worm bin vermicompost, we do this by hand, but I suppose you could also do it with a shovel - carefully....See MoreShould I seed my compost heaps from my worm bin?
Comments (17)I think redwormcomposting dot Com did an experiment like that. I kinda did also. I got tired of screwing around with worms, and dumped them into a 5x10 x 2 feet deep bed I dug. Did the whole filling it with cardboard, leaves, horse manure and whatever else I could find before adding the worms over a 2x5 foot section on one end. These were EF and european nightcrawlers. They have taken over the whole bed, as are a variety of squash and melon that grew from the worm bins. I don't know how to precisely quantify "better" than anything else, but there are a lot more worms than I had before and a lot of crops in that same bed....See Moresprtphntc7a
