How Scratch Resistant is Bonded Leather Furniture
Comments (2)Most likely NOT very scratch resistant. Not all bonded leather is created equal or should it even be called leather. Its basically vinyl with the back side of the vinyl being ground up leather scraps. To make it feel more soft and leather like they cant make the top vinyl coating very thick. To resists scratching your better off going to the real Naugahyde brand vinyl. The leather your cats scratched was pigmented leather, if you had purchased top grain aniline dyed leather then the scratches was not be so noticeable....See MoreLeather and cats???
Comments (9)Actually I'll play devils advocate LOL (I know the devil well...it's ok with him). We have leather and love it with the cats, but we had to learn a valuable leather lesson before it made sense. Cats, dogs, etc., scratch anything they leap up and down from, it's just a degree of how much you see it issue. With less expensive leather, and any leather with a shiny plastic coating (don't get your knickers all bunched up here...that's what it's made of when your leather is somewhat hard or smooth and shiny) which is actually the bulk of the leather you see out there. Those will be scratched and you can't remove the scratches. But if you buy natural leather (it can be dyed but not coated over the finish) the scratches can be polished off in seconds. I have two leather sofa's in the library and the scratches are invisible when it's cleaned up (which I don't do terribly often....even not polished they look great despite being all of my animals favorite sleep spot. And we have two gray sofa's again natural, in our family room that have scratches but look great with a cleaning and polish. They're actually the ideal furnishings in my opinion. No hair sticks :) The down side is they cost probably three or more times what a treated leather sofa will cost (or chair) because hide differences can't be hidden in the final coat in the finish so the dying has to be done very carefully and only the best quality hides can be used. But because of the quality of the leather, they feel like butter :) Now the downside is that natural leather and small children don't mix as well. Not having the coating means that liquids can soak into the furnishings if left untreated (3 year olds don't always tell you they're sprinkling the couch with their grape juice). But we have spilled wine and if you wipe it right up there are no stains... So what's good for pets isn't good for kids, and what's good for kids isn't the best for pets. That's easy huh? :oP...See MoreHelp rescue my leather sectional!!!
Comments (6)My DIL has soft paws. She got them because they have 3 leather sofas, 2 leather club chairs and leather seated breakfast room chairs and bar stools. Their cat does not bother them. He now has two motel/tree thingies which they set near the windows, one in grandson's bedroom on second floor and one in the music room on first floor, and they open the shutters so he can see Kitty TV. I don't think she keeps the soft paws on half the time. I have never seen him with them on. She got several colors so he would be the cool kat, but I don't think they put them on him or either he takes them off. He likes to watch kitty TV from his motel/tree which has a great scratching pole, but he especially likes being in it and watching when the birds are out and about and the kids are home from school where he can watch his young master playing. My son (her husband) took one of the pole/tree/motel thingies to the when it was about 6 months old because he thought it was dirty and bought him a new one. The cat did not take to it and started losing weight and not eating. He went without eating for 4 days, so they took him to the vet. Grandson told the vet "He quit eating when Dad threw his "TV tree-motel" away. The vet laughed and said, "Go to that dump and get this old man's recliner before he has a nervous breakdown." They did and they vacuumed it, cleaned it with microfiber and he started eating again. One of my cats clawed the leather, and I spritzed her with water each time I caught her and she quit, but I think the kitty motel/tree is a good idea, especially if you can put it where the cats can watch Kitty TV and stay occupied with birds and so forth outside....See MoreQuilt from the birdhouse lotto, plus one more
Comments (33)That's such a beautiful, touching story, Kate. Did you know about his antique quilt collection previously? My friend to whom I gave the Warm Wishes quilt said she is also often cold and uses the quilt every day. I don't speak to her that often, so it makes me happy to know that my affection for her is demonstrated daily by that quilt....See Morealex9179
