island rage hood against a wall?

Has anyone ever installed an island hood instead of a wall hung hood over a stove that is not in an island? I have a quartz splash on the wall behind my stove and I'm not sure I want to try to attach a wall hood to it. plus, some of the island goods just look lighter which is appealing to me.

Quartz on a wall behind a range will scorch without the manufacturer’s required high backguard or 6” of clearance in front of it to the cooking zone. That’s the much bigger issue than drilling into quartz.

DH wanted our hood back a few inches for the same reason as salal. This freaked me out b/c I like symmetry but the KD said that this is the preferred position for tall people. Despite my misgivings I agreed to do it their way and I do like it. First, I never notice that is off center to the cooktop. Second, and maybe this is just my kitchen air swirl pattern and wouldn't apply for anyone else, the steam that rises when I'm cooking seems to naturally drift backwards so the larger capture area of the hood to the rear of the cooktop helps to make the setup more efficient. HTH.

I'm not going to argue for particular manufacturers, but an island hood is particularly susceptible to cooking plume displacement due to drafts, and wide and deep are your friends. You do not have the advantage of a wall to constrain plume expansion and displacement on one side, along with the reduction in draft opportunities. It would help if you could describe your layout's perceived susceptibility to drafts, both from air currents and from people moving about. My Wolf Pro Island hood is 26 inches deep (front-to-back) inside the hood entry aperture, and several inches larger on the outside. It is probably adequate in depth at its 34.5-inch distance above my induction cooktop and wok. I think 22 inches would be inadequate unless the hood insert is augmented with sheet metal inside the hood cabinet to provide an overall wider capture aperture. In the other direction, 42 inches may be marginal; 46 inches will better provide some margin. Once a hood entry aperture is determined from the hood selection, be sure that the flow rate can reach at least 90 CFM per sq.ft. of hood entry aperture. Due to pressure losses, this will require a higher rated blower, depending on too many factors to describe in this message, although they are addressed in many other comments on this forum. Be sure to plan the hood ceiling mount location so that the longitudinal center of the hood is over the center of the cooktop, and not aligned with the center of the island.

I hesitated to send as this was the first version of the floor plan and additional changes have been made since originally drawn. I do not have the revised plan yet. A few changes were made to include: frig. changed to a 42" & moved to the right. In its place, an 18" full door pantry to allow left door of frig to open completely when crisper needs to be used or removed for cleaning. The frig move also made the triangle a little bit tighter. Micro moved to island and changed to micro drawer. No uppers on the range wall (as shown) and size of range changed to 48". Island size changed from 6'x5' to 8'x4'. My table and 6 chairs were placed on the plan to see how we could use them for everyday use. With island longer, we will be using only 4 chairs bringing out the other 2 when needed. The new configuration using the 48" range leaves me 54" on the left, 30" on the right. From the plan you can see that the 36" range was centered off the 90 degree turn when uppers were used. Thank you Debbie Washburn for your input on centering the large range hood off the wall measurements not off the turn. After seeing your impromptu pic, I think I should ditch the floating shelves as well. Too busy. We are early in the planning stage so haven't worked with a kitchen designer yet on cabinets. Needed to know appliance placement. The range hood will be a large, stand alone piece and don't want to give up my dream range.

"I truly feel bad for people that let such little things like walking a couple extra feet or having to reach over to the counter next to you for something, make them miserable." For people who spend a lot of time in their kitchen and especially if multiple people are in there at once or making very intricate meals, every extra step can be a bit of a PITA. Something as simple as having to reach around an open frig door to take stuff out and put it on the counter can become a major irritant when done numerous times per day. Fine for a few weeks, maybe not so fine for a few years. A well planned kitchen can be a joy to work in while a poorly planned kitchen can become irritating. A well planned kitchen can encourage someone to cook and experiment and learn new things while a poorly planned kitchen can discourage all of those. I agree with you that attitude makes a big difference. We've cooked in tiny kitchens in Scotland and inadequate kitchens at beach houses. A good attitude and adjusments to what you choose to make can go a long way. HOWEVER, if it's a kitchen that you'll use every day for years to come and you'll use it a lot every day then paying attention to small details can make a huge difference in how much you enjoy it.

^^^I have to agree. There have been a few recent posts about this that are really sad. Homeowner installs a beautiful kitchen with beautiful expensive quartz backsplash everywhere, only to have it scorch and/or crack from the heat from the range. And induction is not spared this (in case you were wondering) because the food gets just as hot. If you look at your quartz manufacturer warranty and/or installation instructions, you will see warnings about not installing the quartz near a heat source, so the warranty won’t help you in that case.

The solution is to install your quartz backsplash everywhere except behind the range. Many ranges have the backguard accessory (extra), typically 7-14” high, and you buy that, perhaps in conjunction with a stainless steel panel that meets the hood. It’s a very “pro” kitchen look. It looks good.

There have been at least 4 posters with the scorched Quartz issue just this beginning of the year. No back guards installed. Learn from their expensive mistakes.

thanks...the quartz is already installed, so I will investigate this "back guard" thing. does anyone have photos they could post?

And some photos of different height backguards. Note they have ventilation holes; they’re not just stainless steel panels. The top photo is what I mentioned about getting the backguard, and then filling in the space up to the hood with a stainless steel panel (I wouldn’t add the shelf though, it’s just one more surface to have to clean). The other pics are backguards of different heights that do not have a panel to meet the hood.

Yes, you can install an island range hood against a wall. I considered doing that myself to get the hood more centered over the range front to back, but you'll need to take that you won't be bumping your head against it if you do install it a little farther away from the wall.

Installing a range 6” from the wall isn’t ”a little further away”. But that is what needs to happen if you want a quartz backsplah and island trim. OldBat2B did the pull away from the wall in order to get deeper cabinets. That involved adding a fireproof spacer to the range hood as well.
